recommend a torx socket & torque wrench combo?

Nearly broke all of my knuckles earlier this year with a Halfords Professional T55

I was using a breaker bar for force on cylinder head bolts though !

It is of course better that the bit fractured, than wrecking the top of the bolt I suppose

Replaced f.o.c. but just thought that you should know this

A few days ago a professional mechanic said that this was commonplace with torx bits and if that is so then beware :nenau
:D

Tools...

Where from, how much, quality, accuracy etc?

Teng Tools stuff isn't to bad for a DIY/hobby mechanic. I think they do two 3/8 drive torque wrenches with a 5-25NM range, ideal for most of the motorcycle tasks. Screwfix sell them at about £40.
Torx bits I use are from Halfords, though I do have some Snap-on pieces and I have had no breakages as yet.
I have two Brotool Torque Wrenches but they only go down to 20NM so I need to purchase a 5-25NM unit asap.
Timpo.

I had the same happen with an Allen key socket recently, 6mm I think. It was the very cheapest (Clarke) but was nevertheless replaced f.o.c. as well. The bloke in the shop said they do get a few back but they sell a lot. I'm no engineer but the forces generated in this type of tool must be comparatively large when you consider the equivalent size of hex nut for the same diameter of bolt and the leverage involved.

Would be very pissed off if a torx or anything else broke. Dangerous, and the break looks very brittle - buy another kind.

As per above Teng Tools are pretty decent, I have some Mastercraft Professional which I picked up in Canada, guaranteed for life just a lot cheaper than the snap on van.

Try Scewfix website www.screwfix.com - there are alot of Torx sets. If I remember right about £14.99 for a male and female set that will do all the major BMW stuff.

I bought a set of these..

They work very well due to the long arms, but no torque facility.

Great for fairings etc though.

Hi,
I have been getting both torque wrenches and sockets from this supplier;
http://www.abbeypowertools.co.uk/subprod/torx-insert-bits-0002047.aspx

They seem very reasonable, deliver promptly and have a huge range of stuff and the Draper gear seems well made, and the torque wrenches are reviewed as accurate. Having said that I keep popping round to Halfords for things I forgot to include in the order!
