Recommend me a Helmet

I have a Schuberth C3 very quiet on a no fairing bike but noisy behind small Japanese screens and nothing special behind BMW GS screens.
I now have a Shark Hakka fold back flip. It's no more noisy than Shuberth but less claustrophobic

Shoei XR1100 for £250 from J&S or Infinity if you want a good quality full face helmet. Very good ventilation.

I've had one for a while now and I'm considering buying another at the sale price to put in the cupboard for future use, as it took ages to find a helmet with a good fit as they are mainly HJC stockists around here and they don't fit me.

It's modular rather than FF, so you can quickly change it from Peaked to FF, or to Jet style (with or without peak)

I've got the previous version, essentially the same but it didn't have the peak gubbins, and it's been excellent....Comfy from day 1 (good job, 'cos I took it on a 14 day tour of Europe the day I recieved it, as the only helmet!) and perfect for a tour because it's so adaptable......raining this morning? make it FF.....sun come out? Put the peak on.....sunny day and bimbly riding? Wear it as a jet

Very reasonably priced at around (or under) 200 quid as well

I'm getting on really well with my X-Lite X-551, the drop down sunvisor works well as it's quite big and drops down to just above my snozzer, it's not leaked yet and has been used in some heavy downpours, it's very comfortable and is finished really well. not the quietest lid with the peak fitted, but that's what earplugs are for.

The Nolan N-Com bluetooth module is the best I've used, built in FM radio, phone app to tune it and set it up, and loud with decent sound quality, way better than the BMW communicator I had in the System 6.

Only criticism of the X-Lite so far is the venting is not as good as it could be, but with the visor open and the sunvisor down, it's great.

You've read my other posts about them, I think 95% of all other helmets look cheap by comparison

I keep blathering on about how good the visor mechanism is, and I've been in engineering design for the last 40 years, so I can appreciate how good it is!!

I bought a Neotec for when I'm touring so I can chat / drink at fillups without taking the lid off, I've also got a Shoei XR1100 - great lid, but I've never worn it since I got the Neotec
The Neotec is just such a nice place to put your noggin in!!

Been putting off buying a flip up lid for years, cos I don't want everyone to think I'm old and smell of wee but I wish I'd bought one ages ago now.

The prices can mount up though mind, I bought the Neotec a Sena SMH5 bluetooth and also a road legal tinted visor for the lid and before I knew it I'd spent £580 quid !!
Worth every penny though, what was it they used to say about Rolls-Royce cars....."The quality remains long after the price is forgotten" or something like that, the same thing could apply to the Neotec.

On the other hand a mate of mine bought a Shark Evoline 3 flip up lid - bitterly disappointed with it, he says its as noisy as f*%k, its a seriously flawed lid ( waits for incoming... ) I've noticed 3 design problems with it and I've never even road tested one yet :-

1/ The flip up chin guard goes so far over the back of the helmet that it makes it impossible to fit a chin curtain to keep the noise/wind out - big noise drawback

2/ To open the visor alone, the tab is not on the bottom lhs of the visor as conventional helmets ( where you can brace your hand on the chin piece to "crack" the visor open ) its on the top edge of the visor in the middle, this means that your covering your vision with your hand when reaching the tab and probably smearing the visor with dirt/flys as you touch the visor to feel for the tab to awkwardly open it???

3/ No pinlock - yes, they reckon its an anti mist visor, but to achieve that they have cut three channels in the visor gasket that let air bleed in to de-mist it when the visor is shut- wtf?? I don't want a cold air blast on my face with a shut visor thanks, my mate has resorted to closing these off with blue-tack as they were annoying him so much!

Put it like this, last Sunday he turned up with his old AGV helmet on, he's given up with the Shark already

JB, we kind of know each other already, I used to turn up to the TRF meetings at Swainby with Chris Thompson many years ago, you probably won't remember me as I'm so ordinary I'm instantly forgettable ( according to the wife )

Anyhow, providing its comfy ( and for me its luuush!! ) stop being a tight Yorkshireman and just go and buy the Shoei !!!

Took delivery yesterday of a new Shark Evoline 3.

It's the one with the chin bar that can be moved to the back of the helmet for those open face times.

Before that, I've had an Arai and a Shoei. Of those two, I preferred the fit of the Shoei.

So far, although it's early days, I'm pretty impressed with the Shark and have tried it with both the chin bar in the normal position and open face.

Thanks for the views...............I am a Shoei man, deep down although I have flirted with Schuberth for the last 10 years, although I still have a Shoei RJ Open Face

As soon as I put the Hornet and then the Neotec, it was like 'coming home'

The Neotec surprised me, like you I have never been a fan of Flips Including the old Multitec) and I thought ..........wow I could wear this one

All my ex Schuberth C Flip wearing mates that now have the Neotec now, say they'd never go back

Nope..packed in trail riding years ago, had DR350, WR200 yam and then did Enduro's with a KTM 250 and finally a Gas Gas 250 EXC, used to love riding off road, but drifted away from it after the foot and mouth ban, I'm only off road on my mountain bike these days, keeps me fit and gives me an excuse to pig out on cake!!

Shoei Neotec

Just bought a Shoei Neotec. and agree with all the other Neotec wearers who've posted before me.

Not the cheapest lid granted but Incredibly comfortable, excellent venting but for me the most important thing is the field of view.

My previous helmets were AGV and when lifesaving I always felt I was having to look round the edge of the helmet even on full neck twist.

Not so with the Neotec. I can see everything

but you pays your money......

can I give a shout for the System 6.

Always used to have Shoei, but moved to the System 6 a couple of years ago. Very comfortable, never leaked and find the flip front very useful compared to full face. I have also tested it against impact and have to say that everything still works as well as it ever did!

Forget the Shark!

Open face and the wind blows under/round the visor and right into your eyes.

Not much room for the sunglasses to reach your ears comfortably.

Disappointed...

In 2 years i have had the following helmets and my obs to go with them

System 6 - Comfy and reasonably quiet but for me it was too " wide" and impeded shoulder checks and unless the front was flipped i found it badly vented

Shoei GT Air - again fairly comfy and quite light ( i always thought i had a shoei head) not as quiet for me as the advertising blurb would have you believe, with autocom speakers in it started to pinch my ears after a few hours, the venting was very good but i had a problem with steaming my specs up ( a few reports of that)

My current lid is a tour X 4, I always wanted one but could never quite get one to fit properly untill a helpfull soul at J&S made me try a size small with the extra padding removed !
Now this helmet that is not rated as being particularly quiet is with out doubt the quietest helmet i have had on me bonce ! it is however heavy and my neck is still getting used to that. The peak vibrates terribly if in dirty air but that has been solved by adding a few wheel balance weights under the rim of the peak. The visor leaked terribly in the first downpour but again that was due to me having a fitted it a bit dodgily and not silicon lubing the seals its watertight now! Thye venting is excelent and i suffer no fogging of the visor or specs

The price was high ( you get what i mean being a yorkshire man) but i am finally ( ithink ) settled on this as my long term helmet

I see that your Tour is "of an age" and i think that the developments have been good since then !

Nothing but praise for the Shoei Neotech

The BMW System 6 just quite simply fell to pieces

The Schuberths have always been my favourite C2 then the C3. Great build quality, and for me ideal. Did the job and I like a flip front.

But bought the Shoei Neotec on a whim ... 'cos I liked it.

Better build quality than the Schuberths, the visor seems more brighter and clear and less prone to marking. The sun visor is optically much better than the Schuberths

Now prefer the Neotec over the C3

I tried the breath guard resorted to anti fog spray but nothing stopped it when the air was cooler on the out than the in that is why I changed it ultimately
