Recommend me an Inline fuel filter ~

I need a pair of in line fuel filters for my R100GS.

The tank is shedding its coating, and it seems to never end

Extremely fine dust is getting past my filters, and into the float bowls.

Any recommendations..?

I'd just buy those transperant circular throw away filters you get in motor factors. They have an arrow indicating direction of flow. JJH

Well, mikeyboy has cleaned the tank with chemicals, and steam cleaned it inside.

But the red coating inside the tank is still breaking down...

As to coating it, can you recommend something..?

well, i was thinking of petseal or something, but have no experience of using it on flaking bmw paint.

Filters will just continue clogging up, then you'll get pissed off and have the tank sealed proffessionally anyway.

I'd find a local specialist and have them sort it out.

Right, that looks interesting; what size was the tank..?

How did it all go, and did the (exterior) paint survive..?

Ah, looking at the blurb, that kit does tanks up to 17l.

I've now bought a 17l kit, and a 34l kit, from Frost's.

This will be enough to do the GS tank (26l), and the RT tank (24l).

Hopefully, this'll be an end to the problem, on both bikes!

Will report back on how it goes

Take it steady and do read the instructions.....just saying.
I did an RGV 250 tank and it was fine but don't underestimate how clean and dry it needs to be before you put the stuff in.
OK it wasn't fine and I buggered it up, don't do the same!

Interested in the progress/success of this.

The coating inside my 80ST tank is also breaking down in a similar way. Its got the colour of Red Oxide (That's the inner coating, not the outside paint)

I'd still recommend a in line filter. It's easier to replace filter than clean carbs. I had the same in my /7 a few years ago don't know what is was but to get of most of it I filled up the tank with petrol and syphond out the petrol into a 5gallon drum using the hose like a vacuum cleaner to hoover up the shit. Let it settle and syphon petrol back into tank beeing carful not to suck up any dirt back into tank. Clean out drum and repeat. I did not keep bike long after but it worked for me. JJH

I had exactly this problem in 2009 and wrote a thread called "rusty tank repair" showing in detail how I cleaned my tank using electrolysis and sealed it using POR15.

I still have in-line filters fitted but don't really need them as it completely solved the problem.

I cancelled the Por15 kit, bought 25 litres of white vinegar for £15, and the red coating is breaking down completely. I've put five lengths of fencing chain (£16) into the tank, shaken it around, and the amount of red stuff coming out is incredible. I've now put the vinegar back in for another week, and I'll repeat the procedure with the chains. After that I have some 40 micron fuel filters that I hope will put an end to blocked Bings...

Same problem, 1990 bumblebee.
Been searching for white vinegar on the net where prices are typically twice the amount you paid, and more. Did you buy the stuff locally or might it be someone who does mail order?

I bought it from my favorite Pakistani supermarket, where I do a lot of my shopping.

£2.99 for 5 litres, 5% acidity. Can't remember the brand, but there were several choices.
