recommend waterproof 1 piece over-suit

I opted for a 2 piece oversuit. Same idea, but trousers and top separate. They still fit into a large bum bag, and don't seem to take up any more space.

However I have found the following benefits to separates.
  • easier to put on over wet leathers, and as there is more freedom of movement there is less chance of getting stuck half in / half out of the suit
  • you can use the top without the trousers - which I find useful in the early mornings / late evenings when wearing a mesh jacket. So it keeps me warmer / more comfortable
  • easier to get the right size. Jacket can be one size, trousers another, and so there is less compromise for those of us who are not a standard size, (long legs, short arms etc)
  • if trousers leak, get a new pair, rather than buying a complete suit
  • seem to last longer than the one piece (i.e. crotch leakage)- which I put down to the fact that it is easier to get in and out of (less stress on the seams).

Couldn't agree more with all that is said. Far more flexible in terms of use - you also get some air ventilation between the two halves, don't risk suffering groin constriction problems and there is less strain on the lower half so it is less likely to leak. HG two piece suits are simple, but very good - I don't know if you can still get them anywhere in the UK.

It looks like BMW have stopped their Prorain 3 suit and gone for two piece as well, so time for a re- think on my part.

......so time for a re- think on my part.

As above, the advantage of a two-piece suit is that you can mix and match. For instance, I have some Aerostich over-trousers (bought via UKGSer's FSW section) married either to a Spada or Halvarsens jacket. You can also decide whether to just use the upper or lower protection, slinging the jacket over a lighter summer jacket on cooler mornings or evenings for instance.

That being said, if you know it's going to lash down all day and you know you are going to be out all day with no significant stops, a decent quality one-piece is still good.

As to which combination (or one-piece) is best? Good luck....

Try some were like Go Outdoors, I brought separate trousers and jacket in gortex so that it is breathable, not cheap but does the job very well and is easy to put on

I have a BMW yellow one piece, it's like new because it has never been used. It would have to be a long ride that I know from the start will be very wet and due to stay that way before I'd wear it.

What I do have is separates sometimes kept in crash bar bags but more often just compressed in a dry bag in the top box.

They are a 20+ year old ( but very good in its day gortex jacket) and for the legs some ex army light weight gortex where I've had the mother in law attach some elastic heel straps (never use and £20)

Both compress very small, much smaller than the BMW one piece

As it's been said above the jacket is an easy to use layer when it's a bit chilly and the trousers should they get damaged can be replaced. I also find that if it's just a light rain the jacket maybe all I need.

The other benefit is if you are doing a trip, you have a jacket that can be used when of the bike.

With this combo, I never bother with my Rally suit linings. They are unused and like new
