Looking at potentially getting the wheel rims on teh 1150 refurbished. They are in pretty poor shape with quite a bit of pitting so I'm thinking of getting them blasted and powder coated.

Does anyone know of a crew in Scotland that will take the wheels and do the job (including rebuilding the wheel)?

Any other suggestions gratefully recieved.

seen a fairly recent thread regarding wheels being refurbished - there seems to be a problem with the spokes corroding in fast - might be better to just buy replacement wheels :nenau

'might be better to just buy replacement wheels'

have you priced them?
Hell , luckily my spokes are ok, so considering getting rims powdered.
Even though , spokes compared to a new wheel canna' equate, surely.
I have in the distant past built new wheels.
Once the bullet is bit, it is quite easy. so may go back down that path.
So anyone know of a good powder coater?:rob

For blasting and painting in the Edinburgh area, I go to...

http://www.hendersonsmetalcleaning.co.uk/

See Lindsay there. He's a really nice guy and achieves a great finish at a very reasonable price. In the past he's always advised that two-pack epoxy would produce a better and more durable finish than powder coating. However, I know that like everyone else, Lindsay is having to cut down the volume of solvents he uses so it might be that he'll be more inclined to powder coat these days.

thanks Fleetwood I know his dad well.
I also knew there was a company in Glenrothes up at Whitehills but that was maybe 20 years back. It was to get my Velo parts done - ended doing them myself. Must try and get some pics scanned so I can 'show off' on here :o

+1 for Devon Rim Company. The spokes are a bugger to remove. You have to cut them and hammer them out. Bloody good luck if you're trying to get them out undamaged for re-use. Next problem is trueing the wheel after re-assembly. Devon Rim are one of very few companies with the equipment and experience to do this for the BWM tubeless spoke design.

I just bought a pair with black powder coated hubs and rims and stainless steel spokes and nipples and I have to say, they look bloody georgeous. But then again, they should do, 'cos they were bloody expensive.

Second that comment , even Central wheels, hagon and Wyldes didn't want to touch the BMW tubeless spoked wheels the last time I checked because they are apparently total B******s to true up needing special jigs.

'they are apparently total B******s to true up needing special jigs.'

Gentlemen - I can only consider that the companies mentioned who will not touch BMW tubeless rims are the same as the companies who 'cannot' touch BMW wheels to change tyres - the do not have the proper sized hub mandrel to hold the wheel. Nothing to do with fitting the spokes and truing the rim.:rob

......they are apparently total B******s to true up needing special jigs.

I was getting that impression, one of the folks I contacted , friendly and helpful but out of my price range in the end, responded like this:

"Hi these wheels are a bitch!! I have an 1100GS so am familiar with the odd way that they are spoked up. This entails extra cost, I'm afraid, in the stripping and rebuilding process. I would imagine that the spokes/nipples will not be reuseable unless they are stainless which would be very unusual."

'odd way that they are spoked up'

nah, sorry , can't take that on board.
Before you strip a 'strange' wheel you first draw the spoke pattern and measure rim offset - if any and also measure what length spoke went on which side.
I believe they do not want to spend the money on the special hub mandrel as BMW's were for years in the minority and generally a BMW rider went to his main dealer anyway.
I have been turned away from tyre fitting emporiums due to them not being able to mount (down Johnny:oonyack) the BMW wheel.

Never had any problem getting tyres changed. Had it done at 2 local Honda dealers. Even the local ATS offered to do it.

Wheels

Don't know is this will be too late but I happen to have an almost new set of 1150GS wheels fitted with new Tourance tyres in the garage for sale. They are off a 2002 bike and are fitted with ABS rings. They are not going to be cheap but they are virtually new condition.

Give me a call on xxxxxxxxxx or pm me if you are interested.

Edit: Delboy, sorry mate, I've had to edit your number out. You must be a site sponsor to advertise anything for sale on UKGSer. You must also be one to send or accept PMs. Ronno

Just wodered about getting rims powdered. Will the spokes (fitting new stainless ones) fit into the holes again after powdering? if they damage the coating on the way in this will have stainless spokes coming in contact with the alloy of the rims spoke holes. This would be disasterous as stainless and alloy contact corrodes faster than chromed parts in contact with alloy. A chemical reaction between the 2 substrates causes this apparently.
Would love to do the rims black and fit stainless spokes but has anyone had any probs refitting spokes through the newly painted rims?
Thanks
Ron
