does anyone know what voltage the "police spec" regulator operates at?

my std. solid state thing struggles to 13.4v @ 4000 rpm, id guess the high output jobbie is at the top end of bmw tolerance ie. 14.2v

i believe dodgy regulation may be behind my indicator problems detailed in another thread. i presently am using an old tin can mechanical reg. that caps voltage at about 14v. may get a high output reg if that proves helpfull. or might just keep tin can on ;)

Hi Cookie,

I bought the police regulator and it works fine but Nobby made up a piece of wire that goes from your starter to diode board. Since this change I think the police regulator would not make a difference as all my lights, indicators etc works brilliant now and it starts no probs! The original wire that was on there is pathetic. I do regret spending the money on the police regulator now as this mod currently would of been a better solution.

Mail chris on chris_stone"at"hotmail.com he will be more than happy to make one up in return for a pint ;)

Cheers

i think i've heard of this bit of wire causing problems before. i had one fall to bits in my hands on an r75 i was working on once.

must look it up on the diagram. guess it's the one that charges the battery.

don't want to do anyone out of a pint, but will be able to make one myself. i was a prototype wireman for years ;)

thing is, my battery charges fine, but i'm getting probs with the L/H indicator shutting off as the revs drop (sometimes). i think it is at least partly to do with regulation/voltage spikes, proved by the fact that running with the old skool tin can regulator almost eliminates the problem. it runs at a higher voltage like i suspect the police job does.

why only the l/h one plays up i'm not sure, but i know it's nothing to do with the indicator wiring. i swapped the outputs & fault moved accross to r/h flashers.

may have to buy a reg anyway as i started stripping the old one to mod it with new diode to uprate it. sadly it's encapsulated in silicone type stuff & somewhat different to the reg i read about modding on the airheads site and may be shagged

might find an old vw one that will do the job.

also going to have to buy a new flasher unit so i can definitely eliminate that from my enquiries. unit seems unique to bmw so they charge accordingly :(

checked out the wire & it looked ok. someone had put a decent size wire in already.

crimps looked a bit "non pro" so i took it out & made up my own wire.

soldered the original regulator back together & installed.

volt rise now 13.85 or more and it comes up much quicker.

not had much time to test effect on indicator. maybe later today.

Cookie PM me your address and I will post you my old regulator if you want to check if it is that causing the problem. I know it is still working ok and only changed it cause I fitted heated grips, gps etc which started draining the battery during the winter. You can have it for.......free.

cheers
