Removal of the Cat

Just taken off the standard pipe to add some Remus headers to go with my Quill end can, and would like to add to this thread-

The Remus headers are 3-4 mm larger in diameter and the junction seems designed to smooth both gas flows. It also comes with a rubber mount at this junction.

I also looked at headers from Quill(£220) and Motad (on offer in Jan £180) both these are only electricaly polished so will need you to finish the job if you want them to shine. These have no junction mount and I feel they may transfer vibration to the can.

Whilst the standard pipe starts narrower it also has a welded ridge inside the neck reducing the pipe by at least another 4mm.
Buel narrowed their headers when they fitted a Cat and lost a lot of torque.
Anyone cutting out the Cat in the standard pipe should take a grinder to the welding too.
Has anyone tried drilling out the Cat as it is visible?
I now have a standard chromed pipe for sale if anyone wants to try cutting out the Cat.
Nick

ps: 2010 Tron-project is go!!!

I had the cat removed from my stock exhaust, had it done by a firm in Plymouth who manufacture race exhausts for bikes, it cost me £75. They cut through the collector box, drilled/grinded out the cat and welded it back up and made a very tidy job of it. Its not easy to do though, the cat is very difficult to remove. When you look at the removed cat, its hard to believe any exhaust gases get past it, its that dense!

I may be interested in getting this done on my 2008 bike, does anyone know if other model years have the same headers?

I want to keep a stock setup so would be looking to but a used header from a breaker and modify it.

If I buy new are the Remus ones considered decent, they cost £350 which is a bit steep IMHO, hence I reckon on saving a good few quid by getting a used header and paying someone to de-cat the thing.

Just to chuck another view into the ring, I've run Remus headers on both an 1150 and 2 x 1200s and I can confirm they make a noticable difference, and are good kit insofar they have done 100's of thousands of miles between them without a problem. They do go brown but can be polished up as good as new if that's your bag.

The lambda sensors only influnce the mixture at low throttle openings wheras it's the engine map which controls the fuelling the rest of the time. However, just changing the headers seems not to cause the mixture to run too lean. Some people suggest if you also put on a race silencer and something like a K&N filter you will be running too close to lean to be healthy in which case a power commander is required.

With regard to saving a few quid by de-gutting the factory cat, I'd also consider the whole life-cycle of the pipes and bike. I usually change the headers v. early which means I can store a very pretty and clean exhaust system ready to go back on the bike when the time comes for resale. Nice shiney chrome bling really makes the bike look as new and well cared for.

So, let's say it's going to cost 50 quid to get someone to degut your original (or quite a few bob more if you're looking to buy a second hand one), say the resale value of a Remus is £200, then all we are looking to gain to cover the cost (£350) of the Remus in the first place is to gain £100 on the resale value of the bike by virtue of it looking really clean with an as new exhaust..

Yeah, I'm making up all the figures but it's a consideration before you jump in with a grinder.

hi mark im in london and im inerested in getting my cat removed on my 04 gs do you have any details ? cheers rob 07788727975

So its an improvement then Removing the cat ? As I have just bought a 09 gs and as soon as I find someone that can weld it I will cut it out ;-)

I bought a Remus header for £150. Apart from the brassy patina it was as new. I sold the original header for £50 so really why bother chopping and welding? The saving if any would be minimal.

Ye that be ok if I got one at that price. I'm in no hurry so I just keep looking for one cheers. :-)
