Removal of the Cat

Hi all, no need to worry about the fuelling as it is all sorted out before it even gets there by the lamber sensors the cat on the GS is more of an after thought really, it dosent make any difference to the sound of the bike just frees up the engine and gives it more rideablility.

Mark with all the interest have you not thought about aquiring a set of headers and doing the job on an exchange basis, you could make a tidy wedge ;)

Many thanks for all your comments on this subject however as anyone who has studdied engineering will know that the Cat does suck some of the power and drivability of the vehicle making no real difference in the fueling of the bike as that is all worked out by the size of the headers which when I fitted a full Akrapovic system on there it came up lean and burnt out one of the plugs.

And to the comments about getting some advanced tuition, well thank you but as a police advanced class 1 car and bike I think I might be ok but if you know a couple of tricks that maybe I have missed the please let me know.

Guys guess what I am trying to say is if you dont have something constructive to say then please dont say anything at all but thank you for your time anyway.

As I have a tig welder sat in the cornerof the garage I will be chopping out the cat soon and willlet you know what it is like, all those who have a full system on their bike will know the difference in power that can be obtained and most of the loss is in the cat just like the 1150.

Thank you for taking the time to read this and if you have something constructive to say the please do.

Just did mine today, you need to make sure you weld it with 316L wire, this doesn't need painting as its stainless, same as the pipe. Welding stainless pipe with normal carbon steel wire aint a good idea. Oh i'm a welder , for my sins, so im not just making this up. Will post any performance results once i get the chance to give it a blast.

Would that be pipelines that you weld?

What about 309L wire, it's stills tainless, will that do or does it have to be 316L? :)

309L is a dissimilar wire (for welding stainless to carbon steel) but it should be fine. Even normal carbon wire will prob be ok, it will rust though, wouldn't recommend it.:rob

Yes. Going down to Kent this year to work, anyone know of a decent country b&b in the Brands Hatch area ?

I'll be on Kent job in early May. Not sure about b&b, i'll be using caravan, but do know somebody who runs a pub in West Malling, can find out if he does or knows of b&b if you like.

Sure that would be great, i need somewhere with decent parking though cos i drive a shamefully large american pick-up, which is a bloody nightmare to park ! Was going to take down the gs as well so need something kinda secure for that.
What do you do on the lines ?

Welding inspector. I've tried to contact the guy with the pub,not replied yet, guess he's busy. Soon as i hear i will let you know.

Recently fitted an Acropovic race system, great increase in urge but can't live with the noise on long trips. My neighbours are patient folk but early morning starts are testing for them. Finally I'm afraid that plod will hear me coming and be ready with the gun - I frequently got by because plod was eating his doughnut and was surprised (I'm talking slightly over the limit on occasions on the less busy roads).
Have sliced open the collector box last night as Mark71 depicted. Getting the cat out is the though bit - got that sorted this morning. Will have to get a proper welder to finish the job. I am going back to a stealth bike.
Really useful thread - thanks.

I have fitted a set of de cat keihan headers courtysey of sargent bilko, the exhaust note goes slightly deeper (still have standard can) but not by much.

its a good mod and it picks up the throttle response and mid range power quite alot, i would say its a worth while improvement for the bike, just makes me think how much better it may be with a power commander fitted aswell :augie

re cat removal

please could you let me know the outcome when you have removed the cat. i have an 08 adventure and i have been told that my bike would be more responsive without the cat. let me know when you can. thanks

Ride did a study on cat removals and say that with the cat removed and fueling set up properly on a rolling road that there was less emissions.

There are loads of threads on this subject but basically, the removal of the CAT make the engine breather better and therefore rev better. You can really feel the difference in throttle response and mid range. If you run with a pillion or loaded regularly, it really is noticable and improves the bike no end.

It should give around a 5bhp hike and most aftermarket systems give the same results.

With the standard can fitted, you get a deeper exhaust not but not much louder than standard but you will notice the popping on overrun.

If you want a power hike, remove the CAT either by a gas axe (like this thread) or aftermarket headers. The end can makes little or no difference to performance but look good and make a louder noise as GerryC stated:augie.

We do an end can which is no noisier than standard and was designed to be very narrow to accomodate Verns Worlbeaters on the 1200:thumb
