hi guy's
i,ve sold my silver ADV non ABS and i,ve now got a black one with ABS and i am thinking of ditching the ABS,has anyone done this, how easy is it,if i were to sell the ABS system to someone how easy/practical would this be and would it be worth the effort, what do you guy's think?....loz :idea

It`s only worth the effort if you don`t want to have ABS.

There isn`t exactly a queue of GSers waiting to buy an ABS system,so don`t do it for financial reasons.

It has been done before (I may be wrong, but I think Le Singe did it ).
Do a Forum Search.

Loz, why remove the ABS system? It works, it's not going to save you any significant weight and it could save your life. If you really don't like ABS 'cos you're a riding god :D then just switch it off.

My 1100GS was purchased without ABS,(I'm in the process of removing the injection system), but I'm sure I've read on here of someone removing their ABS system.

It can`t be any more than linking the brake lines at the unit,or just replacing them with new full length ones from master cylinders to calipers, and disconnecting/removing the unit, really.
Possibly a small wiring mod on later models.....?

that was about it. a couple of new BMW OEM splitter unions i think.

guy had rebuilt a write off & ABS would not play ball so he took it off.

I bought an accident damaged 1100GS, fitted with ABS, for spares, using the maxbmwmotorcycles website, I checked a lot of the brake parts part numbers for the ABS system bike, against the part numbers for the non-ABS parts fitted to my bike.
I'm 99% sure that just fitting the non-ABS brake lines to the ABS bike would be enough to convert it.
My non-ABS bike has all the wiring connectors for the ABS system, they're just not connected.
Obviously you should check everything carefully for your bikes set-up, but I would be suprised if the project was overly-complicated.

it does weird things at slow speed ie walking pace and it weighs 25-30kg so i've been told.rob it's just ABS,22k on the last GS and thirty year's of non abs rideing before that means it just feels weird and the bike does not owe me too much as it is a L reg 1100 re-built to an ADV 1150,but if removal is a pain i probabley wont bother, another question i've just thought of is do i need to put the ABS rings on my offroad wheel's or can i just put them on?

cheer's....loz

All you need to do is fit non ABS brake lines and unplug the ABS unit. the front ABS sensor just unbolts and unplugs but the rear seals the bevel box so you need to either leave it in place or make a plug or swap it for a non ABS bevel box (I've got a slightly higher ratio one kicking about if you want one cheap- better for off roading)

To be honest the abs shouldn't feel any different to a non abs bike if it's non servo, it probably hasn't been bled properly.

Sometimes it's difficult to get the ABS ring bolts undone. On my old ABS bike my off road wheels had no ABS rings, just fit the wheels and put some tape over the ABS warning light :thumb
