I am having trouble remving the downpipes on my Rockster.
I am changing the collector and end can, which came off easily.
Whilst they are off, I want to remove and polish the downpipes and replace the header studs.
Two of the studs sheared off as soon as I put the socket on them, tho came off ok.
However, the pipes are absolutely solid and will not even wiggle (so far).

Is there any technique to getting them to shift?

Have you removed the clip on the horizontal pipe that links the two down pipes (the pipe that runs in front of the crank case)? After that I think it's just judicial use of a rubber Mallet and some strong wiggling. It will move eventually.

Yup, brute force it is then! They are soaking in WD40 at the mo, will try again later.

You'll get there. I took mine of last October and for a while it seemed they weren't going anywhere then after some serious wiggling it all began to come apart.

I gave it another coat or looking-at, and ended up sliding a length of 3x2 softwood behind the curve of the exhaust downpipes and bashing in with a mallet. The exhausts came off in a few minutes with a few whacks and a bit of wiggling.

Then I wished I hadn't as the exhaust studs are f**ked and rusty and I can't get them out.

I did the same thing with my Rockster ended up taking the head off and taking it to S.E.P in kegworth http://www.sep-kegworth.co.uk (not to far from Derby).
They spark eroded and helicoiled for about £20 a stud i think.Hope this helps.

I use the special tool made to remove airheads downpipes. Also works on oilheads :D

Available new £24.62

£3 quid on fleabay

Doubt we're talking about the same multi purpose exhaust tool.

And for £3 it certainly won't be made from brass or Phosphor bronze like the originals. :D

I thought it was now ok to trash adverts so a claw hammer from happy shopper was what I had in mind
