Hi

My 98 R1100GS failed me the other day whilst out, had to be recovered, Lots of Fun!! Not

The fault appears to be where the cabling goes into the bottom of the ignition switch, wiggle it and it cuts out

Am I right, that the electrical circuit parts are available separately, taking the security grub screw out and replacing the electrical switch and reconnect to the loom.

Ignition switch electrical part with wiring

810mm, original was 430mm

The key and lock are all OK

Thanks

Use a small jewelers flat bladed screwdriver to remove the tiny grub screw… dont lose it :D

Replaced the grub screw on mine with a proper allen head one, cheap source of replacement springs for inside the switch is the switch from a mk2 vw Golf and most VW's of the same age . They are buttons

So , I am right, if the wiring has failed in the barrel, I need the part i have highlighted, remove the GRUB SCREW (DON'T Loose), remove and refit new switch

If that's the case, anyone could do this and bypass the key!!, am I correct!!

That's why you have a steering lock - not much point in getting the engine started if the steering is locked. And let's face it - the wires are accessible for good old fashioned hot-wiring even if you couldn't remove the switch. There are only deterrents to theft, not theft prevention.

My ignition gave up the ghost while I was riding in Germany. A local garage bypassed the ignition and fitted a switch so I had no key to start the bike for the rest of my holiday. These bikes are easy to hotwire

Same as pre mid 90's VW's , they just used to pull the electrical switch from the rear of the key part of the ignition and then smash the alloy steering lock and away they went.

I used the springs out of one of these for a temporary repair ..... I had a new one lying around in the garage for years but they are not expensive and an easy way to get the springs of the correct size.

I don’t think a bmw steering lock has prevented a single theft in the history of the company :D it may delay a theft by 5 seconds :D

Thanks for your help, yes, 34 turns of the screw driver and it was out, twist of the switch and I could have been away

So repair, can I get this as a new part from anywhere, that's not £150.00 (Motorworks seems to have the only new ones

Gary

8 available in stock at BMW UK ( later k1200 item ) using part number I posted , mine was from local dealer and was under £120, as it is actually listed by BMW as no longer available even though they have them in stock they are a non returnable item
