Want to do my own service on my 650GS and have bought the oil filter but can't get the old one off.

Tried to find out if there's a special tool to do it but I can only find one in Singapore which leads me into thinking there must be an easier way that I'm missing.

An oil filter wrench

Hi,

As ever i stand to be corrected but I think there are two main types -

One is a lever with a piece of chain or rubber strapping at one end that wraps around the filter then levers it off. About £7 - £20 and works on the majority of filters.

The other is similar to a very large socket that fits over the end of the filter and twists off. I think these are similarly priced however they are model/filter specific.

If i'm teaching to suck eggs forgive me but if i may offer some advice - when putting the new filter on first put a thin layer of clean oil on the rubber seal before putting it back on and then only tighten by hand not using the tool.

Best of luck,

S

The final method is to hammer a screwdriver throuh the filter - not at the engine end or you might wreck the threads - and use that to twist it off...

Try one of these or something similar ... it works a treat on most sizes of filter, and will even work in the confines on the 800 GS motor. The screwdriver method works, but on the 800 is a very messy affair and you don;t really have enough room to twist it off without stabbing the cannister another 3 or 4 times... for something that goes on hand-tight they're bloody hard to get off!
