Removing the clock R80/7

I'm toying with the idea of removing my fairing. Also, I alternate my bikes and after a bit more than a week of sitting there, my R80 is a little sluggish turning over.
So, the question. I notice in the Clymer manual, that not only is there a feed and earth to the clock, there is also a wire from the starter.
Is this right?
Can the clock not just be disconnected and the wires insulated?
Or is needed to complete a circuit?
I still sometimes find wiring a black art
Any help appreciated.

My R90s clocks are both disconnected,,,
bloody power drains
just wire off clock contact, left the instrument light tho'

On the GSs

Normally the clock is fed from another (existing) power source

- i.e. on the GS PD

live goes to live that feeds the light in the Speedo
earth does the same

or a separate earth goes to the bunch of earth wires that Mr BMW included in the loom

i.e. it "piggy backs" on some existing wiring

clock = on all the time

My R100RS had a small switch wired in so that when the bike wasn't being used regularly the clock could be turned off.

On my R100GSPD I use a cheap, battery powered, digital clock velcroed on to the handlebar mounts - mainly as a reference for time related speed limits eg school zones.

Always remember to reconnect the clock when next using the bike, as the clock on an airhead is far more accurate than the speedo.
