I bought a Remus end can at the bike show this time last year and although I immediately drilled out the rivet to remove the end baffle having read a few stories on here about how if I did it would melt the number plate and indicator I left it in place. I have also checked with Cannons and they said I can buy some sort of extender (+/-£25) that gets around the problem although so far it's never been in stock. I tried to get one somewhere else today and was told it is only a problem on 1150's not 1200's. I have now taken the baffle out and it doesn't seem to be too hot near the number plate or indicator but I am interested if anyone out there has experienced the problem or any advice.

Cheers

got a remus on mine and without the baffle it started to melt the numberplate  !
Only looked tonight and with the baffle in, the back of the number is slightly burnt so will look at adjusting the pipe.

The extender you refer to is a deflector as it also tries to prevent the exhaust gasses from going near either the panniers or the number plate.

FWIW, my number plate didn't melt, but the backing onto which the number is printed did start to come away from the perspex.

I did have a spectacularly melted LH indicator once.

buy some adhesive aluminium tape from any car accessory shop. Stick on back exposed part of plate....hey presto!!!! :thumb

Have had a Remus on my 1150 for 20k :D , and on my 1200 for 6k :) . Although I've read about the problems I not experienced any (yet?? :nenau )

20k on my 12GS with a Remus, without baffle for most of the miles and no problems. I've seen melting on some bikes, but assumed that to be those with the full system i.e. no cat.

I can get a smaller number plate and still be legal so will do that and put some of the tape mentioned earlier on it. Should be end of problem, currently it (the numberplate) looks quite burnt!!

1200GS with Remus (baffle in) 19000 miles, no melting.

1200GSA with Remus (baffle in) 2,500 miles, melting.

I have noticed that the GSA's can is skewed slightly to the center line of the bike, unlike the vanilla GS which runs directly parallel. It's possible the welding on the support bracket is not exaxtly up to tolerance, twisting the can's exit mouth towards the number plate. I suspect a spacer wiill sort it out. It hasn't caught fire yet.

Thanks guys - I had a look at the item on fleabay but it looked awful. Have decided to take the baffle out ride a few miles and see - if it is ok after say 10-20 miles I'll leave it out if not I'll put it back in - simple. :thumb

Oops! need to run out and check mine.

No Plate OK

However what I've noticed is that with TT alumium panniers fitted the bracing bracket across the rear between the pannier mounting rails has had the paint burned off :(
