I'm just going through the process of fitting some renthal bars to my 1100, and thought I'd share it with you in case you want to do the same.

First off, why would I want to? Mainly because the standard bars bend or sweep too far back for me. Look at the line of my knuckles vs the line of the bar. This makes them really uncomfortable after a couple of hours riding

So what's the problem with fitting Renthals? Well they're easy to fit, but it's difficult to sort out the wiring for the original BMW heated grips. It has to exit the bar end through a slot, and the bar end weights & hand guards fix into a threaded part of the bar. Not a problem for you 1200 owners though ....

So how to overcome it? This is by no means original thought - others have done it successfully. Take your bars, and a deep breath, and cut the ends off them so you get the circled part.

Better still, get someone else to cut the ends off their bars and send them to you! Thanks Tobers :thumb

You end up with these:

You'll find they're made of a centre core held tightly in the outer sleeve by a couple of rubber bushes. "Persuade" them out. You can then cut off the rubber bushes with a stanley knife, which leaves a "crosscut" pattern underneath. This is important for later. Take the core parts to your local engineering shop and get them to turn them down - but only as far as the crosscut pattern nearest the bar end (you can see it in the pic below) - so they fit inside the bars. You get these (cost me a tenner):

Then select your Renthals:

I got mine from B&C Express - about £35.00

When you slide the bar ends into the bars you get something like this:

Once you've aligned the bar ends correctly with the cut out segment upwards, you can press, persuade or hammer the bar ends into the renthals, until there is no more of the black cross-cut pattern showing. They form a pretty tight fit.

More later when I've completed the next steps ...

Ah! So that's where they went.

If it was me, I'd just use Oxford heated grips - very impressed with them on my KTM. However, I admire your fiddling capabilities!

Hi Tobers

Oxford grips just don't look right IMO! Though I do have a set sitting around...

Hi Nin,

How did you get on?
I have been looking to fit renthals to my 1150GSA as I think the original bars are ridiculously wide, but BMW seem to have set boobytraps everywhere.
Thanks.

Hi Paul and welcome to the site. To be honest I'd forgotten all about this half-finished thread!

The bars are on, they work a treat and my neck/back is much more comfy now.

The 1100 is different from the 1150, but I'd guess the tricky bits are similar - mainly attaching the heated grips and bar ends, and running the wires to an exit point.

But it can be done with a little perseverence.

What are you having trouble with?

Simon

Er ...

The 1100 is different from the 1150 ...

... this is true, but the original thread pics show 1150 hand protectors and therefore bar ends; which might actually make the query more straightforward. Nice job anyway :thumb2

Yeah, sorry about that - 1100 handguards are and look rubbish (IMO) so I use 1150 ones instead ...

Hi to all, sorry for bad manners.

The story is I bought a GSA new in '04 and sold it last year thinking the 1050Tiger would be an ideal replacement but it's not, so I have bought another GSA and want to get it perfect for me.

Nin, my handguards will hit the screen if there moved inboard and I dont think bar-backs will be enough.

Hardly, old chap!

OK I have the same problem and the only solution I can see is a (very expensive) MRA Screen that has less "meat" lower down- but again that's on an 1100.

You might try different handguards - like Acerbis?

There is a handlbar somewhere out there that gives you loads of adjsutment, forwards, abckwards, up down etc - I think I saw it last on KTM talk but will dig around and see if I can find it -that might be what you need.

Alternatively, get in touch with Ricardo Kuhn (just do a search on ADV rider) and he'll craft womething to fit you perfectly.
On my bike I'm working to get the riding position bang on, then making the rest fit around that - so different screen, Fastway footpegs, longer brake hoses etc

I looked into Rickybars for my last GS and found out there hardly any narrower than stock and the guy in the states said he found the same problem lane splitting as they call it.Do tobinators move the screen forward?
Perhaps a combination of these with 1 1/4 bar backs plus lockstops will work.
Your heated grips okay on the ally bars?
Cheers.

That could do it.

I've decided to narrow down my screen with a router instead of splashing out on an MRA ...

I use Mr Steptoe's Muffs, so no probs with heated grips on ally bars for me!

Hi Nin,

I'm interested in this thread and your comment on 'neck and back' problems and wondered what you experienced?
I'm having a lot of pain in my neck and down towards my right sholder when riding for any length of time and wondered if this was the same for you and if the change of bars sorted it?
It's really begining to get anoying now as I ride to work every day and I either do something about it or look to change bike :( (Which I'm really not keen to do!)

Hi Bill

Wade through this thread Most of it is in there. Basically I get neck and shoulder pain cos the OE bars are swept too far back and in, putting my arms in a weird and uncomfortable configuration. Fitting some straighter bars have helped a heck of a lot.

It might be worth you getting in touch with Ricardo directly. He's usually on ADVrider.

All the best

Simon

Do you then have to drill holes in the bars to get the heated grip wires in / out ???

Yup, I did just one, about 7mm dia is big enough for both wires. remember to chamfer the inside edge though, or it will cut the wires.
