Replace dropped helmet?

I dropped my helmet Arai Tour X 2. Resting on seat, fell off as I was getting something out of top box. Fell onto stone/gravel surface from seat height. Just seemed to be a few very small scuffs. Then noticed quite a large paint chip/dent (1 inch long by 5mm wide). Paint gone completely.

Maybe impossible question, but will the helmet be OK to continue to use? I seem to recall having read somewhere that a helmet should be replaced if it gets dropped. Is this really true, can it's integrity have been so compromised, or is a manufacturers ploy to sell more?

I guess I know what I should do, but at bloody c. £300 I'm so anoyed with myself. Bloody stupid mistake.

i think it depends where the chip is and if it's gone beyond the paint layers

They may say it's ok, giving the fella piece of mind.
If it's knackered, he'll need a new one anyway, but falling from a bike seat may not be far enough to total the lid, although it could, I doubt it has.

All you've done is scratch off a bit of paint. The structural integrity of the helmet's outer shell and inner foam won't have been compromised in the least by such a fall.

what he said, it would need to be pretty serious drop before the lid's structure is affected. if you listen to the manufacturers, you should replace your lid every 2nd year too

Agreed; if it is structurally useless after such a minor mishap how could it possibly protect you in a big off. Wear it and stop worrying or worry about something more relevant like why is there only one monopolies commission.

This is the advice from a mate who works for a rival manufacturer (although he chooses to wear an Arai helmet when not using his bike for business use)

If you can, take it to an Arai stand at a show/race meeting. They will probably declare the helmet safe to use there and then. If there is any doubt they will send the helmet to their test centre for a verdict. Apparently they X ray them.

If you take the helmet to an Arai dealer then they will send the helmet back to the Arai distributor who will then send it to Arai. It might take several weeks to get a response.

Bloke at work did that after doing a graceful forward roll over a Nova and landing on his face. They lent him a helmet while his was inspected, serviced, visor replaced (FOC) and returned to him certified fit for use.

Despite my naturally prudent disposition as an accountant, I'm going to turn over a new leaf and 'risk it' by continuing to use the helmet. I know, I know, my middle name is Brave Following Kenny's stylish advice I may even stick some duck tape over it and paint it red/black/white to match. I've come over all faint at the very thought of my daredevil antics!

I think you have answered your own question.

Everytime you pull it on - the fact that it was dropped days/weeks/months/years ago (how long are you going to risk it) will always be in the back of your mind. £300 is neither here or there - how much is your head...

Get a new one - your will be much more careful - yes an expensive lesson but worth it?
