After 46K of joy, especially opening up the throttle at 40 mph in 6th gear, not surprisingly the clutch on my 2006 bike started to slip. It has just been replaced by a frachise at a cost of £992 which included £430 for parts and VAT at a very reasonable 20 f**king percent. Needless to say, when I picked-up the bike I was somewhat surprised at the cost, even though I knew it was going to be chopped in half to do the work. Is that the going rate for a franchise replacement that comes with a 2 year warranty and, out of interest, what would an independent charge?

Labour rates sound typical.

I did my own clutch and it cost me about £440 for parts IIRC, oddly I found bugger all wrong with the old clutch?

I could do a transverse engined Jap bike for a hell of a lot less, I guess its just the price of owning a longitudinal air cooled Boxer.

Surprised at the cost. Did you not enquire as to the lightly cost before giving permission to commence the work? I'd say it shows remarkable restraint by the dealer. You more or less gave him an open cheque. Jjh

Clutch

Couldn't believe it 430 for a clutch
So I went on motorworks site price is right no cheaper where does that price come from
Bought a three part good quality clutch for my Nissan micro £70

1150 gs clutch complete motorworworks £216 inc of the dreaded VAT
It's crazy

Even if the driven plate fits, the rest will not.

It's down to the shaft spline size and numbers. The 1150 is said to work with a modified VW clutch.
If the worn friction plate rivets gouged the driving surfaces the whole lot could be toast.
If they were clean I'd certainly go for a new pressure plate only. Much less money but a risk if the pressure plate spring fails.

I really don't wish to offend but what's the point of asking now ........ Hasn't the horse bolted on that one ?:blast
;)

No offence taken and I completely agree; the bike was certainly bolting a fair bit which is why I suspected the clutch was on the way out.

My post was about my (big) surprise of the cost, if that was typical for a franchise, and what an independent specialist would charge. I know know that it was reasonable and would have been around a third less if an independent had done the work.

Do I take it you haven't seen a Beetle clutch?

From what I have seen a Golf clutch is closer in design.

I used to have a Beetle and changed the clutch. GS clutch is superficially very similar except for the torque springs. Ive not held them side by side to check for minor details like spline numbers, diameter, etc, etc. But a search on ADV Rider soon shows what they have to say on the subject.

This is part of the story but by no means the whole thing

If you are referring to the driven plate, then they are similar - as would many other driven pates. The rest of it is completely different.

Incidentally, pre 1970 VW's originally used plain driven plates, use one of those and there is no issue with the damper springs.

Because a complete clutch kit for the 1200 incorporates the starter ring gear and flywheel as they they form part of the clutch pressure plate..

The 1100/1150 has a separate pressure plate.

£725 supplied and fitted.. could be more if nuts/bolts are seized.
