Hi all!
Fairly new to this posting thing but I reckon its time to say hello and at the same time ask for some advice.
The story so far.
Bought a 05 HP2 just over a year ago with 14.000KM on it and have put a very enjoyable 6,000KM on it since. Added a zumo 550 mount, rear carrier, small tank bag all from TT. Added frame guards and petrol line protection from Holan, hand guards from Barkbusters, sump guard from BestRest and managed to pick up a second hand full BOS exhaust system from this site and run the accelerator module with it. Currently running TKCs but have a Mitas E09 in the garage waiting to go on.
Using Oxford sprit soft panniers with 25L roll bag, works well with for short trips.

Problems so far
As you can see from the mileage the biggest problem I have is getting the time to ride it :(.
Replaced the air shock after it snapped due to the bottom bushing being seized at a 10 degree angle (see picture below). All I can think is that it was laying up for some time on the stand after it was ridden in the sea!! in a previous life. Snapped on a Friday but managed to pick one up (cheap) off eBay by the Monday :)(haven’t seen one since). Side stand snapped 2 weeks ago and replaced it with the BMW steel unit. The usual electrical faults clutch switch and dirt on the bulb contacts.

Maintenance
Oil, air filter, adjust headstock bearings, replace front wheel bearings, grease everything (see above)

And now to the current issue of the clutch! After a great days riding at the resent horizon unlimited meeting (see report in the Ireland section http://www.ukgser.com/forums/showthread.php?t=232216 ) I managed to cook the clutch on the last long rutted hill and now need to replace it (note to myself: will have to adjust my riding style! mind the clutch!)
The options I have come up with are
1 A standard plate
2. Lucas sintered plate
3. Ceramic clutch from TT or Holan
4 Slipper clutch from Wunderlich
The above are ranked in order of price and range from €80 to €990 but the one I favour at the moment is the Lucas sintered plate which come in at €170

What clutch are you using for off-road and what do you think of it?

I am thinking of doing the work myself ( had a look the service DVD and looks like a lot of time involved ) but will shop around for the best labour price once I decide what option to go with.
Also if you have replaced the clutch have you replaced the gearbox seals at the same time, any history with these seals on the HP2?

And finally when I change the rear diff oil is it 220ml as per service DVD or less as I think I read someplace?

Thanking you in advance and for previous post most of which I have read with interest.
Hoping to travel a bit further a field in the future and maybe get to ride and have a pint with some of you.:beerjug:

John

Hi John

Welcome to the HP2 section :beerjug: Always good to have another HP2 rider here :thumb2

As for the clutch - I ended up having the OEM plate fitted by BMW after struggling trying to buy the ceramic clutch. That being said - the first plate was 2/3 worn after 25,000 pretty hard miles (the bike was in pieces to replace the gearbox bearings). I've also read reports that the ceramic clutch isn't really that well suited to the Enduro HP2... So the sintered plate does sound like a pretty good option

As for the Final Drive oil - I'm pretty sure that it's now 180ml recommended.

HTH :thumb2

Yep. But they used to recommend 220ml.

So I'm going to recommend 200ml :D

and I'm sure all of the above are correct :blast

Welcome to the site John - it's always nice to see a "less than clean" HP on here.

I've never had to replace a clutch on any of the GSs I've owned, but I rarely slip the clutch and use it more as an on/off switch :nenau

Thanks Mav/Spout
Looks like I will run with the sintered plate and 200ml sounds good. Will let ye know how I get on :thumb

The ceramic plate is very good once they bed in.....after about 4000 miles :eek :D Let me put it this way that is one thing you won't replace again :thumb2

Final drive oil I also picked the middle of the 180-220 ml range with 200ml and never had problems or a leak.

Thanks Maverick

Sorry, more questions re final drive oil
