REPLICA MARLBORO PAINT JOB

base coat

Today i've been getting the primer coat ready for the first coats of white base coat. I've rubbed the primer down and found a few nicks that needed filling as the colour coats won't fill these. back out with the bondo and a rubdown and all nice and smooth. Another primer coat and a rub and its all ready for colour:clap:clap:thumb2

tack coat and wet coat

as you'll see in the last photo i've sprayed a very light coat of white colour onto the primer, this is a tack coat and helps the next coat adhere well to the primer. i do a semi wet coat next giving it 30mins between coats to flash off the one final wet coat. i do the underneath of the tank first then do the whole top of the tank. I've given the top some extra coats so i have more room to play with when i wet sand. The colour coats are all done in twin pack and the decals etc will be done with waterbased paint before the whole lot gets 2K clear.
Anyway thats it for today, i'm off to pick up the decals now:D

better add the pics

doh:augie

well i've only been able to put the one on as the other 2 pics don't seen to want to be attached:nenau

decals have arrived

yahooo:roll:JB ow the fun can start. now i just need to find my scalpel, long ruler and chinagraph pen:confused:.
The first job will be to find the centre line of the tank and then the point where the red meets on that line, i can then get the line down to the bottom of the tank. This will give me a datem point for things like the Marlboro.
ooooow tis all good fun this:thumb2

It's gonna look great when it's done

I have a spare set of HP2 panels that are crying out for a works paint job :augie

Didn't you have a Dakar?

Todays instalment

Today we start applying the stencils for the various logos.

I started by getting a centre line on the tank, from there i can run fineline tape down to get the red portion of the tank. Lots of measuring and using eye to make sure we're symetrical. then i run a line length ways down the tank to get the line for the lettering. What looks right doesnt always work cos of the tank shape which usually meens a rethink:blast. Anyway from there we apply the marlboro decals and as its a mask it doesn't matter that its pink (any colour as long as its not the colour your painting) Then its just a case of checking they are symetrical and hey presto we're ready to mask off all the bits that arn't red:thumb2
I may get chance later to shoot some red on which will be exciting:rolleyes:

oooow wheres me sunglasses

well a welding mask would be about right. Anyway today following a late night masking job the tanks ready for some colour. A light tack coat was applied which brought up a major problem, Due to the slight translucenty of the colour any issues with the base coat show through and not wanting to find out if this would go with more coats of colour i decided to give the suspect areas another shot of base coat:eek not ideal but it's worked:clap So 5 more coats of Rosso Luminesso and its starting to come together.
Tomorrow we'll get the airbrushes out and do the Marlboro and playboy logos:JB

This is the best thread I've seen for years:thumb2 can't wait for the next instalment:D

This all looks very clever but the question is will it be ready for the Wee-Kend? By the way how far down the queue would I be for a nice simple red and white gspd paint job :augie.

not a chance

There's no way she'll be ready for the weekend:( Not unless a team of BMW mechanics turn up at my house.
As far as getting a paint job, recon you'd be looking at late august:rolleyes:
