Reserve Fuel

I am getting about 280 miles to zero on the dash - not run out and have been at zero but only been the extra 2 miles to find a garage pretty sure there was not a lot left in tank at that (i havnt done any mods to tank though not sure i would be very comfortable drilling a petrol tank filler neck - is it easy to do without damaging anything??)

Mine a 2011 RT1200SE and dash says returning an average 54mpg but i very rarely use motorways - in France/Spain last year used motorways all the way back up from Aragon and it never really differed to the 54mpg (I cleared the recorder before leaving to see if it made much difference)

I wouldnt have said I was a "hard" rider either.....

Yes very easy. Remove it from the bike first so you don't slip and scratch anything or drop anything into the tank.

Reasonably easy, I have two 13mm holes in my filler neck, right at the top opposite each other. Big holes let the air out real easy and makes filling a breeze.

Note the dreaded fuel strip hangs from the filler neck and there is a drain pipe crimped on too, you need to disconnect both without dropping them back in to the tank, I tied them to the bars’ with a bit of string before disconnecting them. I’d take a picture of how the fuel strip hangs from the neck before you unclip it, it costs nowt and might help you refit it later. I used a tie wrap to secure the drain hose till I find something better.

Today I managed to do a complete round trip run to/from work on a single tank of fuel. Never done that before on aby bike.

Trip said 298 miles (super accurate speedo on the RT - all other bikes say 320 miles) and and the computer range reached 0 about 9 miles shy of the petrol station.

I put in 26.5 litres.

When reading the bike's manual it's quite vague when stating tank volumes. Sometimes it says the capacity is 27 litres. Then on another page it'll say capacity is 27 litres with a 4 litre reserve.

Is that 27 litres + 4 reserve or 27 litres including 4 reserve?

I just want to know how close I was to running out of petrol.

Regards

Rob C

PS Doing 298 miles on a single tank of petrol was soooo boring and made me late for work.

Gawd, 289 miles by bike to work and back, I’d slash my wrists

:D:D:D

27 liters includes that stated reserve.
In warmer months I usually see an easy 300 miles per tank.
In the winter it drops a bit, around 280 per tank.

Bikes on 56,000 miles now and running really well.

I've not done the filler mod (did it on my previous 12ST tho) I don't feel the need to do it on the RT as I can rock the bike a little and get a tad more in if I feel the need.
Mind you if you park up after brimming the tank you'll lose some as the fuel expands and pours out overflow. I know this as I now have patch that needs repair on my painted garage floor :blast

Reserve.

Pretty sure the mileage to empty does not include the 4 litre reserve. Did about 20 miles ofter the range stopped showing anything, and then put 25.5 litres in. Getting 54 mpg solo and 59 mpg with my son on the back, steady away cos the wife would kill me if i crashed with him on the back, assuming the crash didn't get me first!!

On a safety note, should anyone be drilling holes in the PETROL tank? Whether it is a mains drill or rechargeable you still get sparks from the electric motor/ brushes. That woman in York showed how easy and quickly it goes wrong. Will put my sensible head away now.

Tank Capacity is 26.84 litres 5.904 galls from Empty to brimming, I ran it dry to find out. That's with one hole drilled (2010 model)

At 54mpg that's nearly 319 miles on mine. Last time I ran it to zero on the computer I put in 1.7 litres which ties in with my guess of about 20 miles left after it reads zero.

I'm sure someone does a 2 litre petrol can so if you're that tight on fuel you could use one of those..

I've not done an actual mileage test on my bike, but the most I've ever seen indicated on the range gauge is 187 miles  I haven't drilled any holes in anything yet, so maybe I'm not managing to fill the tank to the brim.

Mine's exactly the same, although its doing around 250 miles to empty and taking 24 litres to fill.

My RT is still on run in oil. I get something like 200 miles out of a tank. Most of that is town riding with a little bit of 5th and 6th on the dual carriage way. It's going in to have its first service next weekend, will this mean that I will get better mpg? Would love to start seeing mileage close to my adventure. Have been told that mpg will improve with use......

Did the fuel filler mod, like another poster I hadnt really looked at the filler neck so hadnt realised it was a plastic material. I only really fill to brim if I am going on a real big trip and filling up en route (mainly because the first time I filled up was on way home after a ride and I aslo got the petrol expansion and a nice smell of hard earned on the floor)

I am now getting approx 300 miles to zero from full - I think the bike is still bedding in (she now has about 8000 miles on her) so it seems to improve all the time. This could also be to do with "learning the RT riding style" its a bit different from a GS.

Was looking in the manual the other day and there are 2 x consumption figures quoted depending on the grade of fuel used - the better MPG being the higher grade of fuel, has anyone tested this and found a difference. I have only ever used "normal" grade fuel after seeing no difference in power or MPG in a previous car i had.

Would be interested to see if anyone has any info to back up the BMW claim?

Whats your gauge showing before you fill up and how much are you putting in for your 200 miles

Must be some isopon on the tank

On one occasion I got 27 litres into mine, and hadn't run out. I do not think I would have got another kilometre, though. (No mods to filler, just take my time filling)
I once went around 325 miles on a fill, but it is normally circa 250. ( I lose my nerve)

I'll go back through my receipts that should tell me. Fuel gauge is showing empty.

Last fil, I only got 18 litres in it? I presume that I am not filling it properly! Is this because the air isn't getting out of the tank?

Anyone got pics or can direct me to where I can see how to do this fuel tank mod?

Cheers

Mark,

so on your last fill you only put 18 litres in it, how many miles had you on the trip meter ? it means you still had at least 7 litres of fuel in the tank, good for another 70 plus miles.

Dont worry about the miles to go on the computor, you will get at least 250 miles out of a tank, thats about 45 MPG, i got that at the start im now getting about 50MPG and last week in the alps i got 57mpg ( never been heard of the way i ride ) :thumb2
