Reserve Fuel

Last fil, I only got 18 litres in it? I presume that I am not filling it properly! Is this because the air isn't getting out of the tank?

Anyone got pics or can direct me to where I can see how to do this fuel tank mod?

Cheers

You don’t say what your fuel gauge says before you fill up, none the less if your only getting 18 liters in when you fill up, there’s still a lot left in the tank. Perhaps your fuel gauge is showing wrong, mine reads very high all the time, even when the tanks run dry.

300 miles from a full tank should be no problem to a 1200RT, unless you ride like a loony all the time.

Id depends on how big a hurry you are in.

The drilling modification does not actually increase the amount of fuel you can put in the tank. It only increases the speed at which you can fill to the neck.
As I stated earlier, I, on one occasion, put 27 litres in without any modifications. BMW leave an (intentional) small pocket of air at the top of the tank to allow for expansion when bike is filled and parked on a hot day.
If you take another 30 secs filling, you can fill this air pocket with a standard filler.

Have spoken to BMW. When it goes in for service next week they will check the fuel sensor calibration. If it is faulty then it will be replaced.

Thanks for all the comments. Will attempt to run up to 250+ in future...

If it helps, the tank holds 26.84 litres = 5.91Galls from dry to full brimming. I drilled a 1/4" hole in the top of the red plastic filler insert to let the air out as I squeezed the last few drops in.
Work out your average fuel consumption and see if you can make it. You need 54 mpg to to 320 miles then you will be dry. If it's' that close, I'd carry a spare couple of litres.
