I picked up my new 1200GS last week and I have been enjoying myself immensely. But like most of you, I wasn't impressed by the minimalist toolkit and only getting one master key. So I wrote to BMW and expressed my feelings. I received their reply this morning. They have agreed to supply me with a second key and the proper toolkit at no charge.

I know some members of the forum did not get the same response from BMW, so it might be time to have another go. Having done it for one customer, I don't see how they can refuse anyone else.

It would be worth anyone with a R12GS approaching their local dealer with a view to getting a second key (no mention of the tool kit as yet) - although the factory are still insisting on only one metal key per bike, BMW UK are putting their hands in their pockets just now regarding keys ....

Well done Bob..

but what SHOULD the tool kit consist of ?

I think that young lady is going to be slightly busy :D

Gauloises, there's no need to go via BMW UK, go direct to your local dealer. All dealers have now been authorised (this week) to issue a further metal key on request to customers who only received one with their bike - it's done via the warranty system to avoid issuing another key to bikes which came with two in the first place ;)

I guess all those emails and letters you chaps wrote were worthwhile afterall :)

I took the letter from BMW into my dealer and spoke with both parts and sales ( mainly because they were standing together having a chat at the time) and they did the necessary ordering of the parts. I would imagine if you are going in without having contacted BMW direct, the sales team would be the first point of contact.

Excellent news I shall be writing to BMW this week Thanks Bob.

Just a small point but the handbook which comes with the bike actually says it comes with 2 keys......

I got three keys with my new 1150 adventure ltd and a plastic thing as well. BMW Ireland supplied !!! (Owned by bmw uk !!!)

The 1150 wasn't affected, Luke, only the models which have EWS locking (12GS, 12RT K12S etc)

Probably the best point of contact for you guys wanting a second key is actually the service dept as they will be able to rustle up the relevant paperwork so the warranty claim can be processed asap but I doubt it matters a great deal - go to who you know best at the dealer :)
