Excuse my naivety... but where would I find said relay?
I fixed the issue by turning the ignition and on and off again... Glad I noticed it outside the office this morning... Don't think the battery would've made it through the day otherwise

They look like the OEM spots, so the relay may be in the fuse/relay box, but that would be too easy
The fact that they went off when you powered up and down tends to hint at the relay just getting stuck over.....if it was wet internally and was shorting 'on', it wouldn't have made much difference, and likewise, the actual switch to the spots is unlikely to have been affected by the power off/on
Unless somebody knows for certain that the OEM lamps (if indeed that's what they are) have their relay in the box, it could be underneath it (which is a P.I.T.A, the fuebox can be a beeyatch to get out, regardless of how many times Steptoe has done it in under ten seconds with his eyes closed!) , in front of it or close by :for example in the space where the OBD diagnostic socket resides, just in front of the seat under the back of the tank
It will definitely be between the switch, the lights and the battery though
(Shouldn't take more than a couple of minutes to find it)
I'd replace the relay....I suspect that it will be a bit minging inside and this will happen again.
(A bog standard relay is a 'must have' bit in my spares bag, and it won't take you more than a minute to swap it out once you've found the right one.....just swap the connections one at a time for the same number on the new relay)
+1 It used to happen on the spots I fitted to my astra years ago.
that bike is filthy, even the key is dirty, shameful , sticky relay ,

Haynes have been wrong a few times in my experience ?
Iv got to at some point clean & replace at least my aux light terminals if not the wiring itself plugs looking corroded as are relay pins,but it's a tank off to get to them job may just leave them buy new & reposition it all

Yeh same happened to me. Relay it was. It is not only under the tank but you also have to remove a big electrical box thingy because it is under that! Followed Haynes manual - it was right

I had a problem with my gear-position numbers going dodgy. I drove the bike over the "level"-crossing at Llandovery and the resulting jolt had them all working again!

Its a mechanical device with a wiper scraping over a carbon track. A good whack can help for a while but it's on the way out.

Info I used to get one off my 1st GS simple & straight forward,use a 1/4 AF spanner if you don't have a Torx to hand for bolts bit tight behind s/a but worked for me
