I'm planning a long weekend which will give me a day to loop north from Fort William as a base.

Any suggestions please.

Is Skye somewhere you need to tick?

I know Applecross is near but I'm looking for flowing roads as well as scenery and I'm not sure if Applecross is more in the category of an achievement than a ride?

Skye is beautiful and I wouldn't hesitate going there, with nice roads from Fort William to get there (bridge or ferry).

Head up to Ullapool, via Invergarry, Dornie, Lochcarron, Garve (junction) and into Ullapool along the A835.

I believe the cafe at Lochcarron is worth a visit, and a fish&chip lunch at Ullapool (Seaforth Chippie) is defo a must.

Return the same road, or via Poolewe, Gairloch, Kinlochewe, Achnasheen and back via Dornie again.

Lots of flowing roads (Shiel Bridge to Invergarry especially the 15m east of Shiel Br).

Some of the best biking in Europe. As above the Road to Isles or A87 is an absolute cracker - if fast and sweeping is what you're after, this is it. The alternative road to Skye via the ferry - A830 IIRC - is also good but the 87 would be my preference. Skye itself is OK but given your time constraints I'd give it a miss on this occasion. Appreciate that you are after fast roads but the loop around Lock Caron and the pass of the cattle to Applecross itself is worth the compromise. Take the tiny coast road from Applecross then take the A832 loop towards Ullapool - if you don't enjoy this you need to give up biking. Then head back from Ullapool on fast roads.

Providing you get the weather, this is some of the best biking available. In fact even in the pouring rain it's still excellent. Given that you've traveled so far, I'd do everything possible to extend your trip by a day or two and head further North to the coast road then South to Loch Ness and the Caingorms. If that's not possible, I'd advise on getting up very very early to make the most of the day.

You don't say when you're going - May is the best bet for good weather and no midges. Alternative is early Sept.

Having done those routes a few times once pulling my caravan :D (not over to Applecross though might i add) I concur with all that Adam says :thumb2
 
Don't believe a word of it! The roads are pish. The locals are unfriendly and the midges will eat you alive. Far too many bikes up there as it is.:rolleyes:
 
North via Kyle of Lochalsh stopping at the great cafe at Eilean Donan castle, loop of Skye stopping at the Stein Inn for lunch then back on the Mallaig ferry and the sublime "Road to the Isles' through Glenfinnan back to Fort Bill. Utterly brilliant days ride if the weather is OK to good, just brilliant if the weather is dire
 
All crap...F.W. to Mallaig...Mallaig boat to Armadale, Armadale - Broadford, Broadford to Sligachan, Sligachan - Dunvegan, Dunvegan - Uig, Uig to Portree via Staffin, Portree - Broadford, Broadford - Kylerhea, wee boat to Glenelg, Glenelg - Kintail, Kintail- Glenmoriston, Glenmoriston - Invergarry. Invergarry - F.W. Job done.

Do it quick before they put a 50 limit from Kintail to Cluanie.

That's a bugger! Cracking bit of road - that! I believe the Cat and Fiddle is like that already (although its shit in comparison)
 
With the planned speed restrictions I'd better get this done!

With a long ride the previous day I'm maybe favouring doing a Skye loop via the Castle and ferry. Ullapool could be too far - but then...
 
In that case definitely include the wee ferry to Glenelg, and the subsequent ride over Mam Ratagan....after lunch in the Glenelg Inn and a diversion to look at the brochs in Glen Beag
