In Dublin and Westport on work early April. Will have my bike with me. Any routes around Westport that ye Irishmen recommend? Will have about 2 days to enjoy the great Irish west coast weather. :D and of course the beauty the country offers.

Ta.

Westport a favourite of ours ... usually stay in The Mill Times Hotel, a great place :thumb

Head north west on to Achille Island ... beautiful ... in good weather :D

Head south Louisburgh, south to Leenane, coast roads, over the tops to Clifden, coast road Roundstone, coast road, over the tops Oughterard ... plenty of hotels doing good food .... you simply, quite simply, can't go wrong.

Enjoy ...

As you probably only have a couple of days you couldn't go wrong with Mickys suggestion apart from taking the Sky Road into Clifden.

Follow Wild Atlantic Way (WAW) signs - either north or south from Westport. Beautiful rides either direction with plenty of spots to stop along the way. If you want a .gpx file for WAW just let me know.

Agree with both Micky & Aidan :thumb

If you're doing Achill take the left turn after Mulranny, opposite what used to be the Park Inn & ride around Corraun. There's a small Spanish Armada info point along the way.
After Achill Sound keep left around the coast & before you get back onto the main road (R319) across the island there's a small left turn up to the mast at Minaun for spectacular views towards Keel & Keem Bay.
As you come into Keel there's a right turn to the deserted village at the base of Slievemore
Make sure you ride all the way to the end of the island at Keem Bay !

Another favourite of mine is the small road (L1824) through the Sheeffry Hills - heading south from Louisburgh take the left turn at the southern end of Doo Lough. You can follow this all the way to the N59 but the first half is the best bit. If the forestry gate at Tawnyard lake is open that gravel track will also bring you to the N59 but much closer to Leenane. Otherwise maybe come back to Doo Lough & rejoin the road around the northern side of Killary Harbour, Irelands only fjord

After Leenane (make sure you stop at Aasleagh Falls just off the N59 before Leenane) the R336 south to Maam & then Maam Cross is a beautiful, and fast, road. Or take the left turn onto the L1301 to Lough Nafooey. From there you can either head back to Westport via the shores of Lough Mask (although a detour into Aghagower is worthwhile) or continue into Cong and then either back north to Westport or south to Galway or go back onto the R336 and continue towards Maam & Maam Cross.

PM me if you want any further info ;)

Agree with above but Achill can be very exposed if the weather is bad. I was there in September in Gale force winds!

Howya,I live in Westport and fully agree with what Jockser and Micky said, theres not much more I can tell ya other than if you go to Achill after you pass throught keel on route to Keem Bay on your right side is the Achill Head Hotel, then a church then a side lane to the right with a barely visible handwritten sign for "Achill Henge",well worth a look and you'll get all the way to it on the gs

I was raging I didn't see that! Mind you, I could only see about ten foot in front of myself!

Thats true for you smelly.we seen the campsite in keel evacuated during the night last August and in july 15.it was like a war zone, tents flattened and blown away,it was flat calm in Westport less than an hour away.but when the weather is good there's no where like it

I forgot about that :blast Was a point in the Photo Rally 2014.
Bit of a mad yoke but in a beautiful location. Access road was a bit rough at the time...

Jockser, those pics are stunning. Brings out the raw beauty of that area.

Westport

past the Clock and up the steep hill towards the Railwalk Walk, there is a narrow lane which is parallel to the N59.

After ~ 10Km at the T juntion turn left towards Tourmakeady village, (right at the T gets you back to the N59 near the Eaglewood Lodge)

A right in the village onto the R300 & onwards over the R300 or L5630 past Lough Nafooey & L1601/1301, right on the R336 towards Leenane.

Right on the N59 & on R335 to Ashleigh Falls (left) and around the Killary Fjord past Delphi Lough (wild smoked salmon) to Doo Lough, there a left onto L1824.

Past Tawnyard Lough into Drummin, left there onto ? lane, which gets you past the back of Croagh Patrick to Kilsallagh near Louisburg.

Then onto the Old Head beach or to Murrisk for a rest and the last few km back to Westport

Done most of those roads. Spent a lot of my childhood summer holidays in Finny near loch nafooey...no body knows how deep it is...super part of the world:)
