I got invited out for a ride on Sunday. I knew some of those turning up were fast. I puzzled over which bike to take (ZZR600 or GS1200). I decided to take the biplane (GS).

The look on their faces was great. 2 GSXR1000s, an SP1 Honda (plenty of fuel stops then:augie) a 900cc Hornet, and a few others.

They obviously thought Captain sensible had arrived. Perhaps my scuffed knee sliders should have been a clue. The 2nd -3rd gear wheelie certainly was :augie:augie:augie

Things I've discovered about the GS. Sitting bolt upright, on a bumpy road with the scenery rushing by at 135mph, it's still really comfy. And stable. Noisy though.
When the road is damp, under the trees, the rear tyre will step out, when it runs off the edge.
Conti's slide very progressively. Shear luck, and a quick throttle hand kept me upright.

GSXR1000s aren't very stable on bumpy B roads. They don't like it, when they are hanging on for dear life, and you overtake them. Waving. With your feet out forwards resting on the engine :JB :JB

Next time. I'm taking the ZZR. I don't mind abusing that..... :augie :augie

Hopefully, they've realised that A GS does not mean the rider is not a hooligan.

Keep taking the GS:clap

.....don't bother with the 135mph bit next time, just catch them up in the twisties - that annoys them even more :)

I still wonder why you don't see them lining up in Douglas for the Production TT... just think of the glory BuMW are missing....

only problem is when you get to a smooth straight road or a set of lights, they leave you for dead....until the next set of bends :augie

how did ya get a 135 out of it :nenau

BMW claim a maximum of 136 mph. The speedo probably over-reads a bit at those kinds of speeds, so it's probably not too hard to see 135 on the clock. I once saw a genuine and easy 122 mph on the GPS of my '04 bike with a full Remus system and it was wearing panniers and a Laminar Lip on the screen at the time.

You were obviously on roads that favoured the Gs and I'm not surprised that you had a good time and surprised your mates, but a well adjusted suspension setup on a GSXR 1000 would have sorted the bumps, and then I suspect a different story might have unfolded. Don't get me wrong, I love my 1200, but if I want to go quick I take my CBR 600.

PS Unless you've had the suspension on the ZZR 600 fettled you might be better off sticking with the Gs.

I can't claim to have seen 135, but I did blast up a local new, wide hill not far from here. Behind me was my friend on his Ducati ST4S - (with the 996 engine). I was expecting him to come flying past at any time, but he didn't. As we go near the top, he was beginning to catch me slowly. He said he was giving it full throttle and full revs (as I was on the GS).

I have no doubt he'd have screamed past if the hill had been longer and the speed higher. But in this entirely unscientific test, the GS is as fast (or as near as dammit) up to three-figure speeds.

Plus, the road is called Spitfire Way, and my bike sounds more like a spitfire than his. :D

I have beaten loads of sportsbike riders down roads I know very well on my GS. I'm not a riding god and my GS isn't a crotch rocket: They're just idiots trying too hard and getting themselves out of shape thats all.:nenau

Smooth is fast.:thumb

So who wants to see the gps read out of 139mph (on a certain closed public road), the day after I fitted Remus headers on an otherwise standard GS12..........

I always thought my GS12 was the absolute nuts at embarrassing sportsbikes on bumpy roads in the twistys......until i bought this and turned the volume up to 10....!!

You wouldn't expect the st4 to go flying past you. He's got 115bhp to your 105 , that's assuming he's in tip top condition. He weights 215kg to your 229. Close figures close performance.

Also don't become a statistic if your pushing so hard only luck and a quick throttle saved you, maybe it's a bit too hard.

Keep safe
