Rocker Cover Engine Corrosion

Like your work! As mine will be a brand new part will use a protective spray, then hopefully i wont need to repair it in the future???

Make sure you spray all the bolts with ACF 50 or similar. I had mine replaced out of warranty on an 05 for just the labour charge, but within 12 months it is blistering around all the bolts again. - What a pile of junk!

Bolts

Should i go for Stainless steel bolts afterwards, and the spray protection?

Well, that'll help the bolts, but it's the cover that corrodes and blisters round where the bolts go, but as you're going for a new cover it makes sense anyway.

This thread prompted me to have a look at mine again this morning, after its first thorough wash for a while. A 2005 bike with 30k miles, it is on its THIRD front cover - first replaced under warranty, second with a goodwill contribution from BMW.

This one has been on for over a year, and I took the precaution of smearing silicon grease all over the lower half on a couple of occasions. Don't know whether that's helped or not, but at least I feel like I'm doing something.

What I did notice is that it doesn't have unfinished faces where it's been machined. Maybe they have changed production to paint it after it's been machined? If so, credit where credit's due. Eventually.

(Also, dropped my bike for the first time today :( - foot slipped while putting it on the centre stand, and it fell gracefully away from me. I couldn't stop it toppling, but did manage to lay it down fairly gently! Tiny scratches on right rocker cover, ditto right handguard.)

plastic and sponge

hi all
after reading this tread ,had to know if it was corroding under the cover.so that was it off to the garage, drag the bike out. undone the two bolts on the sides easy , bottom bolt was a little harder ,crap and salt got in , left the top two bolts in and the cover came off enough to drag the sponge out , yes it was damp and the cover was painted all over ,07 bike ,however was a little corrosion just starting on the casting on one side , lagged the whole lot in waxoyl bolt threads as well and bolted back together :augie, sponge took a flying lesson across the garden :clap. will check again 3 months time . :) another job done :thumb2
