Rocker Cover with a whole in it.

Please somebody give me some advice. I just dropped lovely new 1150 along the road and holed the rocker cover. Apart from the hole in the cover there was very little damage. I've bought a new cover but on removal of the old one I found quite a lot of road debris in on the rockers. I have studied the oil flow diagram from the service manual best I can and it looks like all oil being pumped to the main bearings etc. gets filtered first.

I guess my question is. How much am I in the Sh*t here. Is this an engine strip down and clean before I restart the bike or is it a case of draining oil, replacing the filter a few times. If anybody has had experience of this and could offer their thoughts it would be much appreciated.

I know I know. Not falling off in the first place would be my response also. Many thanks

ive done the same a few years ago on my 1150 all i done was to obviously remove rocker cover you could also remove the plastic cam sprocket cover and shine a torch in there to see if any debris got in i doubt it though 'did the engine run for long after incident if not i would just strip down the rocker assembly check the tappet clearances and replace with the relevant parts but if your paranoid about it then hello dealer

Well when I got off my arse and over to the bike it was stopped. we ended up quite a long way apart. Then I did the dumb thing after i picked it up and hit the starter button. I saw oil/mist coming from the damaged side and stopped it immediatly . The bike was running for no more that two seconds but.........

If I remove the rocker assembly letting the teni of the head bolts. Do I need to replace the head gasket?

It`s bits of metal from the cover that are the biggest worry. Bits of mud and stuff won`t hurt it. Blow any debris out of all the nooks and crannies with an air line then put it back together. Boxer engines are tough as feck so I wouldn`t bother to take the barrel off. There is not much point in draining the oil out unless it is hot. Any muck that is in there will stay there unless the oil is warm/thin enough to run out quickly carrying the bits with it.
I suggest: Clean out, cover back on, run up to temp, drain & replace oil & filter. Ride
