A99/A9 down East Coast looks to be good and scenic on the map, is it? Are there any good Cafes? Speed Cameras? especially good or dodgy bits?

Any advice appreciated, thanks.

James

The West side of the country is much more scenic with better biking roads
Only imho of course :D

Fine North of Inverness. Plenty better routes South of there.

Up and Down

Our plan is to go up the West visiting Ullapool etc, across the top to Thurso (hotel) then John o Groats and back down. Was wondering which way to go South??

Dont know much about north of Inverness but south of there i'd highly recommend going thouh Caingorms via grantown on spey A939 then A93 to Braemar (decent biker cafe just of main road)
Keep on A93 south from there. Fantastic road and scenery

+1 :thumb2 Much better than the A9 (worst road in Scotland) or the A82 down the side of Loch Ness

From Thurso - I'd head back west, and up strathnaver to Altnahara, Lairg, Bonar Bridge, and south on the A9, and head over to Braemar as others have suggested.

Don't bother with John O Groats - it's a shitehole.

Coast road down from Wick isn't that interesting, Altnaharra road is, I suspect there's no other road with so little habitation outside of the villages.

Loch Lomond road on the north side is a must if you want to see loads of coaches / caravans, maybe Nessie and Drumnadrochit. Otherwise head on the south side and the old military road.

Inverness - Tomintoul - Braemar - Perth is really entertaining as has been said before, there's also a cafe at the Lecht ski area too.

A9, avoid if you can, as much as you can. Loads of accidents and cameras especially between Perth and Inverness.

South of Inverness, head for Grantown-on Spey. Take the A939 Lecht rd. Meet the A93 and turn right toward Braemar. Follow the A93 all the way down to Blairgowrie - superb road.
A923 to Dunkeld.
A822 to Crieff.
A9 to Stirling.

Wis up there last week wi some lads doing the end to ender,
n Yep still a sh@thole o a place dose o chalet,s have been put in which does nought for the place either

When you head out of Bonar Bridge take the B1976 over the top, great biking road and not much traffic.

Dont mean to be picky but its the B9176, its called locally the Highland TT, was much better when they spent some money on repairs but since the building of the Dornoch Bridge its become second string.
I have been over this road countless times in fast cars, bikes, tractors and HGV, snow, wet and dry, it never fails to impress, off camber corners, 90 deg bends etc.
Well worth doing.
Home was Bonar Bridge for me, brilliant roads about, as peeps have said John O scrotes is shite, but then it is the last part of the journey and also the contrast when you run into Caithness from Sutherland and you go across the peat moors is interesting.
Lots off single track roads in the North West, not too many petrol stations, depending on time of year lots o Blackface sheep, they are unpredictable and may not even move off the road, or wait until the last second then jump into the middle just because they can.
The run along the top from J.O.G following the coast is lovely, awesome beach at Bettyhill, one of Europes best where you can collect you own Garnet stones.
Its a beautiful part of the world.
