Has got to be the best piece of Tarmac in Europe.... That's all, just thought I'd share that after a Spanky day weaving it's length.:thumb

Except the N260 West of Andorra, or La Bonnete, Susten Pass, Fluella Pass, Julier Pass, Col Agnel, Splugen Pass, Izoard, Galibier etc. etc. etc.

Certainly beats anything England has to offer, but nowhere near the best in Europe IMHO and not on my ever growing list of roads to ride again (not even in my top 25)

Pah!!! Off to the Pyrenees at the weekend will have to check out the N260 and report back!!

And Castellane is one of the nicest places to stay along it.....

The very best bit is probably the section from Sort - Adrall (25 miles) but it is a great road from where it meets the N230 at El Pont De suert which is about 60 miles to Adrall, although if coming down the N230 from the North your better off turning Left at Vielha and taking the C26 to Sort :thumb2

(Or turning right at Sort up the C26 if going the other way)

it's really very, very nice n' that, but IMO it isn't the best piece of Tarmac in Europe. this might be though
:nenau
C28 : Esterri d'Aneu to Vielha - Just looked at that route on Google Earth, looks pretty good to me!

The only road I’ve ever been on that was great the second time is the Grossglockner, a visit to The Grey One’s place seems a good idea to me :thumb

You're talking about totally different types of roads there.

I love the RN, but always wish I was on a sports-tourer rather than a GS.

Al:)

The Route Napolean is indeed a very fun road and some of the scenery is stunning but I find it too fast on a lot of the sections :nenau I always feel that to make the most of it I'd need to be on a sports bike and doing the sort of speeds that would really scare me :nenau

I much prefer twistier, nadgerier, technical, sub three figures mountain roads (oh, and depending on the time of year the R.N. is feckin' busy!).

+1 :thumb2 If for no other reason than you ain't gonna get a huge fine / have your bike impounded / spend time in Jail.

The N260 is a good any-bike road, I did it on a ZZR, but it was tight enough to be good on a GS most of the time, a bit like the B500 only better with less traffic and superior scenery.

Many of the Alpine roads are still good on a sportsbike, I really love the Splugen but admit it really is a road for slower bikes (Like the Furka / Stelvio / Umbrail etc) but the Julier pass road is another excellent stretch of smooth tarmac with few 1st / 2nd gear corners, as is the Susten Pass, Fluella Pass, the run after the tight parts of the Majola and many more.

Once you need to be into 3 figures to get any sort if fun I don't like the road so much, you only need something half way around the bend and your in trouble.

The only road I’ve ever been on that was great the second time is the Grossglockner

On next years itinerary, along with some other new passes and hopefully a few old favourites along the way :D

Debating which is the best road in France, is like debating which super model would be best sitting on your head..... In short, the one you were lucky enough to be enjoying at that moment would be the answer.

There are lots of 'Great roads' all over Europe. The Alps maybe gets a top heavy advantage as they are different from the others and the scene of some of the classic road races from the twenties, thirties and fifties. They were also bloody difficult to build in the first place, so command a top billing in some bods' books perhaps?

But spread inbetween the four corners of the EU there are lots of others, just as good....not better, just different..... All heading off somewhere or other. If anyone is lucky enough to ever ride them all (or even scratch the surface) in a lifetime they will have been very lucky.

Just been doing some research and came upon this, which i liked very much:D

Also ridden the N260 a couple of times along with Route Napolean, Alps, Dolomites passes etc all tremendous in their own right.

The N260 on an FJR for the first time in 2006, (in fact 3 of us on FJR's) road deserted and were making some pretty spirited progress and 2 spanish bike cops came the other way also at a great rate and waved at us:thumb

Went back 2011 and attitudes not so laid back now.........shame

Ahh the N85. Fond memories of being parked up at the roadside by a stretch of particularly good sweepers when two of France's finest Gendarmes in shirt sleeves in close formation grounded out their R1150RT's on both sides. Much to the delight of the gathered locals and tourists alike. Applause and cheers all round. Happy days. When in that general area I can also recommend the
D994 / D94 from Serres to Nyons as another great piece of super smooth, well engineered blackstuff.
