I keep having a problem with my Streetpilot III. Every now and then the routing will not work at all. The route is plotted from a location in the south of France and zigzags across Europe in straight lines.

The only way of curing this seems to be to reload the operating system onto the unit and all of the mapping data onto the card. It really annoyed me on the way back from a really enjoyable day at the NEC yesterday.

Can anyone shed any light on this - is it a common problem or should I go back to Garmin?

You've not got it set up for off road routing ie direct point to point rather than auto-routing? In Mapsource go edit - preferences - routing and tick the autorouting box.

AFAIK if you download a new map set to the data card it updates the preferences eg autorouting, road speeds etc. HTH.

No, I wish it were that simple. Its set to fastest route. But when it calculates the route it starts a mile from the destination (regardless of how far away from the destination I am) and then goes zig-zagging across continental Europe.

I suspect that your route takes you across an area for which you do not have a map segment loaded. Here is how I suggest you troubleshoot it:

Create a series of shorter versions of your route - in other words, break the route up into several pieces. See which one of these smaller pieces doesn't work. That will help you pinpoint where the missing map segment is.

I don't know what version of cartography you are running - the newer versions of CityNavigator are pretty big - for example, all of the map segments that make up France add up to over 300 megs of data with CN Europe version 7, and you probably only have a 128 meg data chip in your SP III.

Let us know what the name of the starting and ending towns on your route are, what version of cartography you are using, and what the size of your data chip is. We (several of us) can then determine how many map segments are needed to support your route on the GPSR, and what the total size of that map segment load is.

Hi

It was autorouting from the NEC to Basingstoke in Hampshire, about 100miles as the crow flies. I'm sure it should be able to do that without becoming confused.

Sorry Tim, I think you missed the point that Pan was making, if you don't have a map set loaded it can cause this type of problem. Do as suggested, break it up in to smaller sections and see which part you get the error. This is likely to be where you are missing the map set. All you then need to do is reload that map.

Pan,

I apologise for the thread creep. However, I am still using my SPIII with CN version 5. Now that the Garmin upgrade prices have tumbled, I intend to hand on to the SP and update with version 8 (hopefully next month). My question is, given the growth in map file sizes and that I'm still running with the 128mb card, would it be more sensible to upgrade with CS?

Might be more sense to get the 258mb card for the SP3? At least then the UK is ok. As an example, the SP3 258mb card will get you to the French riviera with a bit each side from the NW England.

Or, you could have the UK on the 128, and Europe on the 258mb card, if you can be bothered to change them over when crossing over / under the channel.

John,

Cost of 256mb + cost of map upgrade = nearly cost of Quest

I hate getting rid of things that work :(

Do you still have the problem if you use the "Select Maps Around Route" option ?

I suspect the same. But I have also seen this "bug" when the route crosses a border between countries.

Anyway - the remedy is to chop up the route in several smaller pieces to detect where the glipse is.
