Following a recent trip around Wales, i am in the market for a Satalite navigation unit for a GS where i can load a journey plan onto it.
I know most units have the options of adding a 'via point' but the number of via points are usually rather limited, some offer alternative routes - shortest, quickest , avoiding motorways etc.

What i would like to do is sit down on my pc with google maps or similar programme and plot out my whole route and then load it onto a sat nav. This may include a full weeks travelling around Europe where i have identified particular roads, points of interest or destinations i want to travel too following a route i have chosen. Most important is riding on the roads i want to use between destinations.

Are there any systems out there which have this functionality?

Have a look at the Garmin range they use MapSource and BaseCamp software for route planning etc.

The Zumo range are the bike ones the most popular is the 550 and 660

Garmin info

See Below this is a reply i got from Garmin when asking which of their units accept routes from a PC.

Hope this helps.

Andrew

Dear Andrew Harrison,

Thank you for contacting Garmin Europe.

I am happy to help please find below the devices that have the feature to take routes created from MapSource or basecamp and then sent over to the device. If the device has LMT , LM , LT or T on the end of the model numbers below will also be compatible. I am afraid that the device listed below are the only ones that are compatible with routes being sent over.

Zumo 550

Yes - I agree ... if you want to tab between google maps and a route planner then Mapsource (the Garmin software) is probably the way to go. :thumb2

zumo 660, everything you need is in the box, piece of piss to connect direct to the battery.:beerjug:

Route planner - www.tourstart.org

Free of charge route planner is www.tourstart.org where you can store as many routes as you like and also find inspiration from other motorcyclists who made their motorcycle routes public.
All routes can be downloaded to Garmin, TomTom and Navigon, so routes can be shared among all motorcyclists.
