I,ve read lots of stuff about seats and have just become more confused about what's what.....so here is my question.
My bike is a 2009 plate LE model, it has what i think is a standard BMW 2 piece heated front and pillion seat.
My problem is i am short of leg ( 29" inside leg) and so am on my tippy toes. I would need to get about at least 1/2" lower to the ground.
The current seat is in the lower position of the two available.
As this is a secondhand bike i need to make sure that the current suspension settings are returned to factory settings just so i have a good base to start from.

So.....my options seem to be,

try to lower the suspension settings without ruining the ride,

try the BMW lower seat option - ( this appears to be a standard seat but with less padding ), but am unsure how much lower this will get me to the ground....compared to the standard seat i have now.

Get the BMW comfort seat, which is supposedly lower than stock.......again i,ve no idea

Get the original refurbished with less padding, different profile, gel insert maybe, to lose some height.

Get a third party seat - Corbin - Sargent etc

I know that BMW made a lower version of this model, anyone know what they did and could i do the same to my bike.....

notes ; I want to keep the seat heating option, i find the original seat plenty comfy, this is all about trying to get my feet on the ground, i know i,m not going to get flat footed, but i need to be much better than tippy toes. I will be touring 2 up later this year and want to feel more secure.

Anybody care to chuck in with whatever you got...........

Thanks, Duncan.

I've a 29" inside leg and found the low seat too close to the footpegs, so it gave me knee ache in my dodgy right knee. It was also more uncomfortable than the standard height seat as I discovered on the rental RT I rode for 3500 miles in 16 days in the States.

I also had the BMW comfort seat for a while but didn't like the way it locked me into one position closer to the tank. I like to make progress and move around on the bike in the twisties, so it really didn't work for me.

At the end of the day the standard seat was the best compromise for me.

Thankyou sven, how is your suspention set up - pre load etc. What i didn't mention in my post was the last resort of lowering the suspention via wilbers shock replacement. Pretty extreem maybe but the bike has 20K on it. No idea on price comparison between low seat option vs shocks. Lower shock gets me at least 35mm.... oh eck.

I have the short leg issue too with a 29 and one whole 1/2 inches. I have the standard seat and the comfort seat. The comfort is lower but its wider so its actually a wee bit more of a stretch to the ground. I prefer the comfort seat to be honest and can get one foot flat and the other nearly flat on the ground which does me OK. Persevere with the normal seat height or the comfort seat for a bit and I'll bet that you'll be fine. Much lower and you end up with achy legs as your heel to arse length gets cramped.

I have an inside leg measurement of 31" and whilst I prefer the comfort seat I did need to fit the Wunderlich peg lowering kit as my legs were a little scrunched up at first and this has improved comfort no end.

I fitted a touratech seat onto mine, they are available in differing heights and allow you to have seat heating. They are more comfortable and have a better shape than the original. The other option is to contact someone like Motorcycleseatworks and have your original remade to suit yourself.
