The "Chap in the Cap" made great play recently about Rukka gear being issued as standard to the Met Police (and one other force in the nether regions of the East, apparently) and deduces thereby that the Police/other professionals like/aspire to riding around in Rukka gear.
Let me remind you that all the other forces are equipped either by BKS or Hideout - not least because they do make-to-measure.

Given the state of budgets these days, I’m surprised the last few left aren’t all riding round in Oxford’s finest and a pair of Derry Boots

So the chap in the cap was telling the truth. But thanks for the reminder 😂

He talks a lot of crap most of the time, he tends to twist things to suit his narrative. I like Rukka gear, it fits well and the armour is larger than most and for a textile suit feels protective. However all the police riders I’ve seen wear leather.

Same with laminated gear v mesh in hot weather. He always mentions working hard off road in his preamble, as far as I can see from their website they only do road gear not off road, so why mention off road riding probably because it’s the only time a rider generates heat on a bike and therefore when mesh has an advantage.

I’ve ridden 50,000+ miles on road in hot weather 30c - 40c over the last 15 years wearing a mixture of mesh gear, originally HG then Klim Marrakesh, and laminated gear, Klim Badlands.

Advantage of the mesh gear is it’s lighter to wear and at the end of the day my base layer is dry.
Disadvantage is dehydration, even drinking 2ltr+ during the ride and inconvenience if the weather turns wet or cold of having to stop to put on layers/waterproofs.

Advantage of laminated gear is it works well in the UK sections of the ride. The vents can be opened or closed depending on need, <15c or >38c, to keep out the cold or hot air or rain. It’s easier to stay hydrated, a 2ltr camelbak will generally be sufficient.

Disadvantage is it’s heavier to wear and my base layer will be damp at the end of the day.

Neither makes the air feel cooler, 35c is still hot wearing either. I still sweat, the bodies method of …. Etc (if you’ve seen his vids you know the rest of the speech) in both.

It’s very much a personal decision which to wear, both have merits but he’d have you believe mesh is the only choice for hot weather and laminated gear can’t work.

The chap in the hat has the ability to divide opinions. I have bought from Motolegends and found the experience very good. I don't particularly like the bloke, but then he is not my mate, he runs a shop! Luckily I have the ability to watch reviews and make up my own mind.

Simple answer, if you don't like the bloke or what he is doing, don't watch his reviews and shop somewhere else.

For hot weather, I bought some zero fit ice stuff, it gets my thumbs up, seems to work really well. Used to use Proskins but they seem to have gone out of business, still got a few sets of their base layers but they are a good 8 years old and coming to the end of their life

Motolegends actively plug and promote the products they sell, which is hardly surprising; most enterprises do the same. The only time I see Motolegends’ videos, is when they are posted here. They are not compulsory viewing, thankfully.

That aside, Motolegends do give good service when you visit their shop in Guildford. There again, so do Infinity in Holborn.

And in my experience he’s spot on. Laminated gear is too hot when it’s warm.

There’s a thread on here every few weeks knocking Motolegends.
I find it bloody strange that the guy has a very successful business, provides customer service that his second to none yet still boils the piss of many in here .

So go do a Buzz Lightyear and go to Infinity and beyond :comfort

As a retailer I think they are very good, as a source of information it tends to be biased, as you would expect.

I’m not knocking his business, I’ve bought various things from them and always been happy with the service. It’s just his opinions, from mesh gear & laminates to air vests, he comes across as he is right and anyone who disagrees is wrong.

However all the police riders I’ve seen wear leather.

I doubt it is a binary choice.

I can imagine that those working in urban environments travelling relatively short distances might prefer leather for the better protection it offers. I can imagine that someone escorting a slow vehicle over a long distance in shitty weather deciding to wear decent Goretex stuff.

I can also imagine someone getting made to measure leathers and using off the shelf Goretex stuff. Although, made to measure textiles is a thing I believe.

it's a common ploy with influencers to get more clicks and shares

as long as you see his socials in this light rather then a Martin Lewis style consumer champion you will not go far wrong

The Met used to source their leathers from Mike Williams (MW) in East London. MW closed down years ago, not helped that they couldn’t compete with alternatives. Before that, Lewis Leathers, in the West End. They too are long gone. 10-1 says who ever supplies the Met now, won’t be around forever.

Silvermans still supply Met riders with clothing bought privately, as the Met couldn’t or wouldn’t supply them. Giles used Berghous over trousers (I think they were) in his time with the Kent force.

my best suit , is my twat suit .
Aerostich is a great cold weather suit , ok in the rain ,
my HD jacket FXRG , is next paired with Rocker jeans , jacket is waterproof , remove liner if it is warm , remove half the leather if hot , it becomes a mesh jacket.
