Wind chill advice with Rukka gear

Two years back I decided to 'invest' in a Rukka jacket and trousers. So far my experience has been that in terms of waterproofing it is without fault but on a long run in low temperatures I find myself getting a bit colder than I would like. Even with the winter lining, a couple of layers of clothing and thermals on underneath it seems that the wind is getting through and slowly leeching all the warmth away so that after a couple of hours I really need to stop and warm up.

From reading threads elsewhere on here it seems this is not an unknown experience with Rukka gear (which is annoying considering how much it costs). As I plan to keep riding during the winter I need to come up with a solution to this that does not involve buying another jacket. Of course I could just wear a slightly more windproof jacket under the Rukka but that just adds to the hassle of getting the gear on and off and it would be nice if there was a better option. Maybe there is alternatives to thermals that also offer protection against wind chill?

So, are there any other Rukka owners out there who have come up with clever ways to deal with this? Or can anyone make any suggestions?

Heated vest...

Heated vest...

Heated jacket with a temperature control. It's all you need wear under any waterproof for 8 months of the year.

Use it with my aerostich all the time, no bulk and any temp you feel like at anytime. Perfect.

The BMW heated waistcoat is a superb piece of kit. As it keeps your core warm, the rest of you remains warm and toasty as well. It's lovely when its cold - sort of like snuggling into a nice warm duvet, but whilst on your bike (best of both worlds!).

I've used mine throughout several winters. Highly recommended.

Heated vest: I have been using exo2 storm rider for three years excellent - whilst you're at it get the heated gloves. heated grips just heat the inside - heated gloves heat the outside - toasty

Thanks folks. I'm trying to avoid the hassle of going with a heated jacket (got enough wires with the autocom) but the TOTR stuff looks interesting.

The best piece of kit I've ever bought

I bought an EDZ innershell: http://www.edz.biz/bike/Product_pages/Windproofshelllayers

The top is about £50 and packs down to a small bag not much bigger than a mobile phone. It's incredibly thin but very effective under any protective layer. It cuts out all the wind chill associated with a vented suit (leather or textile) and associated with a light fleece is all I've ever needed. :thumb2

Other makes are available but they often try to include a thermal layer as well. The beauty of the EDZ kit is you can take it with you even in the summer and you don't need anything more than a pocket to transport it. I use mine at outdoor events like rallies as well, worn under a fleece you never feel the cold.

As you can tell, I think it's great. So does Les at Traveldri and many other tossers. And no, I'm not on commission :P

Try wearing a snug hi vis waistcoat that is windproof. It might just make the difference to your core temperature and be a cheap solution. If is doesn't work you still have a hi vis waistcoat to use in those dark winter days and nights..

Heated vest...

Yup, heated vest is the way forward

Keis do one for about £90 with adjustable heat settings and a battery pack if you want to be wireless from the bike

I use the standard battery pack on Level 2 (of 5 settings) and find it'll last around 5 hours :thumb2 , they do a larger capacity battery but its a bit expensive. If the battery pack runs out I plug direct into the bike battery if I need to

When it is really lashing down I use my 25year Rukka oilskin jacket over the top of the expensive HG goretex waterproof. Nothing gets through that...

Although a Smartwool top, Snugpak softie jacket and then the HG are toastie for most riding. Just need a bit extra in the rain.

Hmmm...you chaps have given me a nice (cheap) idea. I have a lightweight Henri Lloyd sailing jacket, designed for summer use it is windproof while still remaining breathable. I tried it out over the weekend under the Rukka and it worked perfectly. So that's the problem solved, and without having to part with any dosh. Result! :thumb2

Agree on the EDZ ,don't know its on its as light as a feather, wind proof Also good in summer as if you are out and the evening chill catches you out just pop it on...... I also have a Rukka (SRO)
