I have an idea which I bounced off Paul BHT earlier this year, which will enable you to do all or any of the above...
Here's the loose idea.
Still reading? Here's a bit more detail:
Running - I know there are a few runners on the forum, and I know that even more people talk about "wanting to get fit" especially, it seems, around the 1st Jan...
This event will allow you to run the whole distance, or just do a leg of whatever distance you want to aim for. The whole shebang is about 69 miles and I think we should do it over 2 days. This is a long way, so it's a decent challenge we're setting ourselves. But, again, if you just want to join for 5 miles then that's absolutely perfect.
The more the merrier.
I like the idea of Hadrian's Wall, because it's the shortest coast to coast route
and it should enable lots of (especially) Northern English and Scottish tossers.
to get involved. (Just to be clear, it's absolutely open to all, personally I'm based in Surrey so I could hardly be further away).
The route will be partly road, but as much as possible off road. Should be challenging but absolutely spectacular.
Logistics - I reckon we should identify a campsite, just beyond midway, and at the end of the first day the runners and helpers can all have a cracking knees up with good nosh, good beer and good craic around the campfire.
Timing - Spring 2013 because the weather might be a shade better for camping, and because the daylight will last a bit longer. I am undecided whether we should start on a Friday (and hence have the Saturday night post-run to have some fun) or start on a Saturday (so no-one needs a single day's leave). Open to debate!
Team - If you want to run, then tremendous, decide whether you're up for one mile or 69, and use it as the best possible reason to do some training in the new year.
If you're good with maps and know the local area, I'd really appreciate someone to step up as being in charge of the route planning. Together we'll agree the best possible route: Then...
If you're a whiz with the GPS, we'll need someone who can turn an OS track into something our riding, and running, satnavs will understand.
If you know how to put a tent up, light a fire and pop the tops off Brakspeare's Double Drop, we'll need you to put up your hand to help with the overnight plan.
If you can ride a GS and find your way to a grid reference, we'll need you to meet the runners every so often at pre-determined points, armed with water and jelly babies to keep the inner man satisfied and offer random verbal abuse. Also, runners who want to do just certain sections can be dropped off or picked up.
Do you live in Newcastle? A couple of people might want to leave their GSs at your place, and be ferried to the start on the west coast. I will...!
If you can use this as a reason to twist the arms of your work colleagues and get them to commit a quid or two, then we can all put the time/effort in, knowing that our efforts are going to the very best causes. (I'm talking about contributing directly to our chosen charity(ies), the actual costs of the event such as the overnight camp and nosh will be born by each of us (should be pretty minimal, other than possibly the beer......
).
Daft idea? Probably, but I've heard dafter.
For now, please just let me know whether you'd be interested in any of the roles above - we'll get into more detailed planning as time goes by.
Oh, and a name for the event??
Tossing across the country?
69 to the Tyne?

Here's the loose idea.
- It's a coast to coast run.
- You can run all of it, or just a bit of it.
- It needs lots of logistical support, so you can help with:
- - route planning
- - sorting overnight camping/catering
- - transporting runners' kit
- It will be some time in the spring
- It will be pretty much along the route of Hadrian's Wall
- It's all aimed at raising a bit of cash for Help for Heroes and possibly a couple of other charities.

but let's see whether we can interest a handful of people - if so, it's a 'go'.
