I have an idea which I bounced off Paul BHT earlier this year, which will enable you to do all or any of the above...

Here's the loose idea.

  • It's a coast to coast run.
  • You can run all of it, or just a bit of it.
  • It needs lots of logistical support, so you can help with:
  • - route planning
  • - sorting overnight camping/catering
  • - transporting runners' kit
  • It will be some time in the spring
  • It will be pretty much along the route of Hadrian's Wall
  • It's all aimed at raising a bit of cash for Help for Heroes and possibly a couple of other charities.

Still reading? Here's a bit more detail:

Running - I know there are a few runners on the forum, and I know that even more people talk about "wanting to get fit" especially, it seems, around the 1st Jan...:D

This event will allow you to run the whole distance, or just do a leg of whatever distance you want to aim for. The whole shebang is about 69 miles and I think we should do it over 2 days. This is a long way, so it's a decent challenge we're setting ourselves. But, again, if you just want to join for 5 miles then that's absolutely perfect. :thumb The more the merrier.

I like the idea of Hadrian's Wall, because it's the shortest coast to coast route :augie and it should enable lots of (especially) Northern English and Scottish tossers.:flag
to get involved. (Just to be clear, it's absolutely open to all, personally I'm based in Surrey so I could hardly be further away).

The route will be partly road, but as much as possible off road. Should be challenging but absolutely spectacular.

Logistics - I reckon we should identify a campsite, just beyond midway, and at the end of the first day the runners and helpers can all have a cracking knees up with good nosh, good beer and good craic around the campfire. :beerjug:

Timing - Spring 2013 because the weather might be a shade better for camping, and because the daylight will last a bit longer. I am undecided whether we should start on a Friday (and hence have the Saturday night post-run to have some fun) or start on a Saturday (so no-one needs a single day's leave). Open to debate!

Team - If you want to run, then tremendous, decide whether you're up for one mile or 69, and use it as the best possible reason to do some training in the new year.

If you're good with maps and know the local area, I'd really appreciate someone to step up as being in charge of the route planning. Together we'll agree the best possible route: Then...

If you're a whiz with the GPS, we'll need someone who can turn an OS track into something our riding, and running, satnavs will understand.

If you know how to put a tent up, light a fire and pop the tops off Brakspeare's Double Drop, we'll need you to put up your hand to help with the overnight plan.

If you can ride a GS and find your way to a grid reference, we'll need you to meet the runners every so often at pre-determined points, armed with water and jelly babies to keep the inner man satisfied and offer random verbal abuse. Also, runners who want to do just certain sections can be dropped off or picked up.

Do you live in Newcastle? A couple of people might want to leave their GSs at your place, and be ferried to the start on the west coast. I will...!

If you can use this as a reason to twist the arms of your work colleagues and get them to commit a quid or two, then we can all put the time/effort in, knowing that our efforts are going to the very best causes. (I'm talking about contributing directly to our chosen charity(ies), the actual costs of the event such as the overnight camp and nosh will be born by each of us (should be pretty minimal, other than possibly the beer......:D).

Daft idea? Probably, but I've heard dafter.

For now, please just let me know whether you'd be interested in any of the roles above - we'll get into more detailed planning as time goes by.

Oh, and a name for the event??

Tossing across the country?

69 to the Tyne?

Paul G.

Paul,

Great idea Paul. I'd be up for part of the running bit, not sure i could manage the whole thing though, but who knows.
I'm ex mob so always happy to support a very good cause:beerjug:

Stu

Thanks Stu, that's great.

I haven't exactly been swamped with interest thus far :blast but let's see whether we can interest a handful of people - if so, it's a 'go'.

gerardwatts (Scottish section) has kindly offered to lend a hand so we're getting there!

:D Excellent, thanks Boxerboy55.

As you've probably sussed out, this event is far less about the run, and mre about being able to say:

"But darling, I know I'm off on the GS with my tent and my beer grin for another night, but it's for CHARITY..." :thumb

Cheers, we'll liaise closer to the date about the logistics.

let me know when you sort the dates out i could possibly be available to bring my van and cook some food up for the runners, also have an event shelter thingy gazibo which might be handy, keep in touch Steeevo

Thanks Steeevo, that sounds fantastic - just the job.

I think that with a fair wind between now and then we'll have enough interest for this to fly, so thanks I do appreciate the offer.

Update

Ok here's where we are up to.

Firstly, thanks again to all those who have expressed an interest.

As it stands, we have just about enough interest for this to fly, but it's a bit marginal.

Having sounded out some initial interest, I'll now let the thread go quiet until maybe late January next year.

At that point, I will identify a possible date (hopefully clear of any other GSer events) and post another couple of threads to see what interest we can generate. I would expect there to be a bit more interest once a) it's not so many months away and b) people can pin down an actual date.

At that point we'll make an honest assessment - if we think it has legs (sorry...) then great stuff, let's do it and have some fun.

If not, then we'll not flog the proverbial deceased nag, we'll gracefully drop it and retire to the pub. :thumb

Sounds like a decent plan?

Cheers,

Paul G

Hi! I'm sort of new here but I would love to participate! As a runner and maybe some pre-event-day-logistics if needed :) I live in Hull now, but by then in Darfield (near Barnsley).

Hi MoBlo,

Thanks very much for the interest, your offer is much appreciated.

I'll make sure I alert you in the New Year when I light a fire under this idea again.

Hi there!

Thanks for the mail, and yep, it's time to see whether this is a 'go' or not.

Personally I still think this is a really interesting idea. As well as providing an opportunity for all those so-inclined to have a bit of a jog, I think that it could be great fun to be involved with some of the logistics and the opportunity to muck around for a weekend with GSs, tents, maps and beer.... and all this for an excellent cause, it's almost too good to be true! :D

OK here's the plan. I'll contact (via PM) all those who kindly expressed an interest previously and ask them to let me know whether they're still fired up and available. I'll also send out another message appealing to others who might be interested. Once we have a gauge of how many people would want to participate in some form, we'll know whether it's viable or not.

If it IS, then we'll quickly swing into gear organising the logistics - exact timings / route planning / overnight camp plans / etc etc.

Thanks for the prod - watch this space....

If not feasible for this spring, it might be better/best to aim at spring 2014, perhaps? More excuses for weekends with gs+tents+maps+beer/whisky=win and of course, most importantly, more time to win over some people and/or encourage them to get into running for a great course: it is possible to get from couch potato to a 10K or even HM in a year (if committed!)

Thanks MoBlo -

Those of you who have responded to this thread, you already have a PM - it looks like this will indeed have to wait until spring 2014.

I hate having to delay it - because I was really looking forward to the run, the craic and the opportunity to raise some funds for an excellent cause - but the reality is that next year I'll have more time to do a proper job of organising it, so it's in fact the right decision.

Those who have indicated interest so far, do not think of escape, I have your names....

Cheers,

Paul G (the other)
