Runing in my new 2008 GSA

R1200GSA is correct in stating that modern engines need little running in. Machining these days is very much better than is was even 20 years ago, and you have a German made (lol) bike using some of the best materials around. The owners manual is writen by BMW for a BMW bike, so best to follow it, they probably know what they are doing.

Also pointed out and much more important these days is that you are runing in the bike not only the engine, get on a new bike and give welly down the first highway you come to is not wise without checking the bike very carefully first. We trust the pre delivery check, but I've have a brake caliper fall off a new bike (american made), a hundred things can go wrong with a new bike you don't want them to happen in the red zone in 5 gear while banked on a nice sweeping bend. You are also running you self in on the new mount. Common sense really.

and the 1000km (600miles) took me about 3 days, so not exactly a pain.

Thanks for all your replies.

I'm keeping the revs down as best I can ... but can't (practically) avoid going up tp 5000rpm. I've stuck to B roads and avoided the normal M4 route to work.

So far, at 350 miles;-

Pro's-
Love the gear box ... what is should have been previously
Think ESA is great (not just the gimmick I thought it may have been

Cons -
Heat grips stopped working at 320 miles
Huge vibes at 400rpm
Engine sometimes cuts out in 2nd (normally when approaching roundabouts at appropriate speed!)
Coughs and splutters in lower gears
Sometimes need to open the throttle to get the thing to start!

Not too concerned about the cons so long as it all sorted after the first service!

I'm sorry to say, but my old Triumph Tiger's 885 triple engine is still better!

Cheers

Andy
Hi
I own a new GSA and also had problems with it cutting out! At my first service I was told that it needed re-mappin as BMW were aware of the fault that "some machines " had, The re-mapping has fixed it and the bike runs a lot better having done 900 miles in a week! love it to bits!!!
