R1200GSA is correct in stating that modern engines need little running in. Machining these days is very much better than is was even 20 years ago, and you have a German made (lol) bike using some of the best materials around. The owners manual is writen by BMW for a BMW bike, so best to follow it, they probably know what they are doing.
Also pointed out and much more important these days is that you are runing in the bike not only the engine, get on a new bike and give welly down the first highway you come to is not wise without checking the bike very carefully first. We trust the pre delivery check, but I've have a brake caliper fall off a new bike (american made), a hundred things can go wrong with a new bike you don't want them to happen in the red zone in 5 gear while banked on a nice sweeping bend. You are also running you self in on the new mount. Common sense really.
and the 1000km (600miles) took me about 3 days, so not exactly a pain.
