Picking up a new GS on Friday(SSB) and plan to put a few miles on over the weekend. Any tips on 'running in' would be appreciated and also 1st service criteria ie mileage/cost etc.
I take it from your post it's brand new...first service is at 600 miles and the price of the service is included when you bought the bike. By the book running in is basically under 4,000rpm...
As Nadeem says the book states a 4k limit on the rev range up to 600 miles, but personally I believe in starting to add revs earlier say from about 400 miles.
On the subject of costs of the first service, it used to be labour was free and you paid for the parts (about £35) but since the 1st of March it appears this has changed and labour is no longer covered.
When i picked my 1150 (not 1200) up they advised against long trips first up/ said the 4000 revs was avisable but more important was Not to let the engine labour. Also advise to include as many hills as possible . Keeping the revs varied. My bike is just due for its first service , i think it is running great.
Controversial maybe but logical in the way it is explained. Did you employ the theory Dave and if so what is your verdict?
Tempted to go along with it and leave the consequences with BMW warranty if its incorrect!!!!!!!!!!
As BMW has left it up to the dealer to decide if the customer is having to pay for the first service, I wonder how many dealers will now do the first service for free (excluding oil etc.) ?
My dealer advised me it was OK to do a 'few' extra miles before the first service and charged me around 35 quid, but I seem to remember they did give me a litre of oil FOC as part of the deal and fitted a remus Y piece for an hours labour.
Fair to say they did comment on the 1100 miles on the clock but did not seem unduly worried...

My previous 1150 was'nt new to me, it looked and felt as though it had been pussied from new, by the time it had done 30,000m it was still using oil at a rate of 2000m from top to bottom of sight glass. So perhaps it had never bed in the rings.
Yes, I did use this method up to 4,000rpm and after 2500m on the GS from new the sight glass is still above half way up.
It just does not feel right to use this method on a new bike, but as the above proceedure says, the first 20miles are the most critical. I had to plan my route from the dealer so be able to use lots of throttle as soon as the engine was up to temp. The BMW handbook also tells you to use the bike with lots of hill work and not to use motorway type roads.
After 2000 miles the engine only now feels run in.
