Morning all, going to be greedy by asking for your advice on two matters. (1) Am currently running in my GSA with the twin cam engine. Am following the handbook to the letter i.e 0-125 miles 5,500 as often as possible, 125-250 6,500 as often as possible, 250-375 7,500 and 375-600 will be short bursts of max acceleration. Is this how everyone else has 'run' theirs in? I ask as my previous GSA was no more than 4,000 revs until first service. Have spoken with a couple of Motorrad dealers. One stated was not aware of different rev increments and thought that riding in such a manner on a new engine could lead to premature engine wear whist another said it should be run in as per the handbook as is much more robust engine. (2) From experience the aluminium panniers on my previous model scratched very easily and were buggers to keep clean. Have tried a couple of companies who advertise 'protective film' as am thinking of trying this. However having looked at my panniers both companies said they could not do it as would not stick to the natural oils.......Anyone else tried this or should i give it up as a bad idea?
Thanks very much.

Ran mine in at 5-6000 Rpm max from the start for 600miles and its great uses no oil and seems pretty smooth. The panniers are best covered with ACF 50 regularly if you use them in the winter.Motorex protect and shine is good to.To be fair the panniers look better with a bit of age ,you only see the shiney panniers parked up out side Waitrose:D

Ran mine in to the book, used no oil for 2500 miles but now has started using a bit :nenau

I dont have panniers :D

Ran my in by the book. The way I see it is that the best people to know what is best for the engine is the people who bought it in the first place. It always makes me laugh how some people think they know better than the manufacturers and advise or do something different. Some of the arguements sound pretty plausible, but I'll stick to what the manufacturer says. They spend millions on R&D and so I'm sure they know better than anyone else.

That being said, mine uses quite a bit of oil, nearly the max allowed. I'm going to mention it when it goes in for it's service. Maybe when I switch to fully synthetic (which they're now recommending) it'll not use so much :thumb2

I'm the opposite. I believe that an engine should be ran hard from new.

This has casued a lot of controversy. My opinion is though that this guy hasn't spent anywhere near the time and money on the boxer engine as BMW, so whilst his theory is very good, and obviously backed up with photos and personal experience I still won't take his 'word' over the guys who built the engine, and spent millions on R&D :thumb2

Ran mine as per mototuneusa 4 years ago and 64,000 miles later, it runs like a dream and has never used a drop of oil:thumb

You can vinyl wrap the panniers so pm Paddy Dakar of this parish who will do you a cracking job:thumb

Well I've had 2 DOHC GSA's, first one with 8,000miles on clock before it was stolen in Germany, was run in for the first 1200 miles with 'spirited' rideing up to 6000rpm with no motorway use, no stress on engine and it didn't use a drop of oil. That engine was a peach and ran as smooth as silk.
New bike with 1500 miles on clock, run in same way. Engine vibs like 'feck' and drinks oil. Ya pays ya money and you take your chance with the way you run a bike in.

Cover your panniers in ACF50, clean it off every couple of months with WD40 and then re-apply. Works with mine anyway.

Hi Snerks, if ya run it in as per the manual (2010) your thrashing it before 600 miles is up and that's what I did, sh!t my Licence!! was glad when It had its 1st service then I could slow down a bit :thumb
Also, I dont know what BM put in it at the Factory, but mines had 10-50 fully synthetic in since its 1st service, and it did not need topping up from 600 to 6000 or 6000 to 7500 miles that it has on now :nenau

Best regards Stretch :)

I am sure RIDE did a test a couple years back. Took a couple bikes. Ran them in per manufacture's instruction and some they just thrashed the nuts off. Their conclusion no discernible difference. Surprised me at the time :aidan

The recommended oil up until this year was 20-50 semi synth so that's what I've been running. It'll be going in for a service in the next few weeks and so will have 10-50 fully synth so will be interesting to see what the oil consumptions like then. Reading various people's responses I do get the impression I work my engine harder than most as do use the full rev range (well nearly, I don't quite red line it) :thumb

I have never used anything else since 2003 other than 10-50 fully syn, including in my 2 Harley Davidson's 2 Hayabusa's my Fireblade and Gixxer 1000 and now my 2010 Twin cam, also when its bouncing off the rev limiter which it has done regularly, I'm happy I have the best in there. :beerjug:

Best regards Stretch. :)

Running in - don't worry about it. It's a strong engine. Ran mine in by doing all the wrong things and it doesn't use a drop of oil. Just ride it.

Panniers - They're panniers FFS :blast .....Go places and get stickers.
The well used patina is far better than a shine.

Thanks very much

Hello again, now find myself flat on my back due to a back injury. Typical now that spring has arrived!

(Permission to say: "C**k")

So your advice and experiences have been even more appreciated as I cannot do anything else at the mo!

Kind Regards to one & all
