This post isn't meant to infer any expert knowledge, it's just my obeservations that you might find interesting.
In the 1990's I worked for a police force as a PC on a motorway unit. We ran Vauxhall Senators 24v which used to come new from the workshops with about 20 miles on them. There were all sorts of different opinions on how to run them in over 1000 miles and it used to be quite interesting to see what the results were as the cars used to get about 175k on them in 30months.
Of course the problem with a patrol car was that despite best intentions, sometimes it was unavoidable due to incidents. (this didn't include going for a midnight thrash - there's a separate thread for that discussion anyway).
I managed to run one in as per the handbook, it was by far and away the best on fuel economy throughout its life. It always felt asthmatic at high revs.
I ran one in by keeping the revs to the recomended 4000 for the first 100 miles, then I progressively upped the revs by roughly 1000rpm each 100 miles thereon. The car was generally average compared to others in terms of feel and top speed, fuel consumption. It never needed much oil.
The last one was 32miles old when it got into a full on pursuit with a Calibra Turbo that was about 60 miles in duration. This car was by far and away the fastest one I had experienced throughout it's life, being really strong at high revs however after about 50k it developed a taste for oil, in fact about a pint per day.
