For some reason I was looking at the invoice for the running in (600 mile) service on my GS and I noticed that there wasn 't an item for oil for the final drive. I've spoken to the dealer's service person who started off by telling me that there is no requirement to change the final drive oil and then, after I'd pointed out that I had an e mail from BMW customer services which clearly listed the oil change as part of the service, they said oh yes of course it was changed but we must have forgotten to charge you for the oil.
I've done about 700 miles since the service.
Having a nasty mind, I wondered is there is any easy way to check if the final drive oil has been changed?

I would take in and say unless they can prove thay have done it (which they cant) they should do the change now as you wait. The first change in my opinion is the most important! Even if you end up paying I would get it done for peace of mind.

They should have given you the printed checklist of the items caried out for the 600 mile service with a tick against each item including the rear drive oil change. I assume you do not have this.

If they cannot prove they did it then they should do it now as a good will guesture -it would only take them 20 minutes max.

Alternatively change it yourself for piece of mind!

I recently had a new replacement rear drive.

I dropped the oil (to check quantity) after only 50 miles and found a considerable amount of swarf on the magnetic plug.

An oil change 600 miles later showed no swarf on plug.

So I'd say most bedding in and swarf creation is done early on - so it's importantant to make sure your oil has been changed.

I will not bother too much about that , if it doesn't leak then you FD is perfectly ok . Most mechanic's they use the comune sence ! Some bike's they go a life time with the same oil .

Is english not your first language or have you just come back from the pub? :augie

If there is any doubt in your mind (and clearly there is) that the dealer has not changed the FD oil then ask them to change it, at their expense, while you watch them do it :thumb2

they can't prove that the work was done, and i can't see any dealer doing it again (while you watch? video?) just because you think it might not have been :blast

If it was me I would just buy a litre of the correct oil and change it myself. If you have these nagging doubts in your mind its the only way to remove them completely. I change mine every 6K service anyway - the cost of the oil is minimal and its easy enough to do, you might just need a couple of Torx heads you don't already have.

Well I suggest then that you go to the wrong dealers

If there's no tick in the appropriate place on the service schedule and they haven't booked out the oil from the parts dept, and the service advisor claims the oil never needs changing, then it would be fair to assume that it hasn't been done. I'm convinced that any reputable dealer would, for the customers and their own piece of mind, do it again just to ensure that the correct work has been carried out at the appropriate time :thumb2

With respect, you do all your own servicing anyway on a bike that is out of manufacturers warranty whereas the OP has taken his brand new bike to a BMW dealer to have the 600 mile service carried out to the manufacturers standard service schedule and paid good money for the privilage of allegedly having it done correctly :augie

I don't disagree with you at all which is why I said "if it was me". When my bike was in warranty I had it dealer serviced but still changed the FD oil myself just to ease my own mind. I know I know, this would possibly have caused an issue if I had had a failure and it meant the oil was probably changed more often then needed, but as I put in the recommended oil with the correct quantity it didn't cause any issues.

It sounds very iffy and I doubt they have done it, on my bike I had it done by Steptoe at 7k, the dealer had supposedly done it at 600 mile and 3.5k but what came out was dirty, stinky, sludgy crap and there was swarf stuck in the drain plug. Subsequent changes by myself produced a pretty clean oil coming out which suggests although on two occasions my dealer had ticked the box, they had probably never done the bloody work!

You really cannot win as so many dealers are cowboys and it is hard to believe anything they say, if you take it back they will probably wheel it round back for 30 minutes and return it with the work still not done.

On my Tenere I changed the oil myself at 150 miles (FD and Engine) so when it does go in for first service I am not too worried if they do or don't change it.

The problem is you never know if a dealer has done the work properly unless you can stand and watch them, in which case you may as well save yourself the cost and do the job yourself.

I am lucky enough to be capable and comfortable in doing most basic service work myself and having a suitable garage and toolkit, I really feel for those who are not able to do so and have to trust the dealer will look after their bike properly as in my experience there are far more bad dealrs than good ones out there.

Go back and insist on watching the Mo-Fo's do it, and make sure they use a bloody torque wrench :thumb

twice

Mine changed at both 600 miles and 12,000 miles by the dealer, who I trust lots

Had mine done at 600 miles first service Im on 1200 miles at the moment I mentioned to the service manager I was going to Spain in sept he said bring the bike in and they will give the bike the once over for oil levels tyre pressures before I go for free is it worth getting them to change drive oil again?

Not now due untill 12000 miles or 2 years

Just looked at the invoice from my first service, and the final drive oil isnt obvious on there, but it is ticked on the attached checklist. That's good enough for me.:thumb

How come you've survived for so long without getting decked by someone ?? I've never known one person come on here and spout so much crap about dealers as you do. Have you just pissed so many of them off over the years you've just run out of options so you have to maintain your bikes youself or what ? I really find your remarks quite offensive .
