One more 'soon to be' GS owner joins the ranks - Hi all :)

I'm sure this must have been covered before but haven't turned up anything searching the forum.

On Tuesday I pick up a new GS12 :D :D :D :D

This will be the first new road bike I have bought for longer than I care to remember so I am going to have to run her in.

Now I have run in race engines on dynos but never a road bike on the road.
I am very tempted to run the bike in similar to a dyno run i.e. not 'labouring' the engine but using *all* the revs, up and down the box all the time (road conditions allowing of course!). The idea being to form a good seal between the rings and bore, not letting the bore 'glaze'.
This may also go some way to helping reduce the initial Boxer oil consumption?

I appreciate that there is no difinitive answer to the question but I would welcome peoples views, and better still, experience in how they have run in their GS's i.e. 'Ride like you stole it' or as per the manual.

Cheers in advance and here's to a long and happy relationship with my first ever Beemer :beerjug:

Hi Andres,

when I ran my 12GS in I kept it to a max 4k revs for 200 miles & gradually took it up to a max of 5k revs until 600 mile service using about 3/4 throttle. I ran the bike in over very hilly ground, Hardknott , Honister Pass etc to work the engine both on open throttle & closed using engine braking. It does noticably loosen up over the first 1k miles so don`t worry about it juddering under 3k revs, just keep it above that!

Heres the roads I ran mine in over, it is steeper than it looks on the pic!

I'd have to agree with Big Lee. I kept mine to 4k for the first 150 miles and then slowly upped the revs to no more than 6k just prior to the 600 mile service. No full throttle and plenty of gearchanging etc.

Must have done some good as she's used much less than 500ml of oil during the last 1200 miles and feels better all the time.

No problem. Have to say it makes perfect sense and I don't consiously 'run' a bike in. Just ride it through varied terrain fairly hard (as per normal) and avoid labouring or constant (motorway) revs. Done it with mine and numerous 'job' cars.

Thanks for your mails guys.

I think I'm goona' go for a sort of 'half way house' in the style of Mark, ie no labouring but using the revs. I don't quite have the guts to do it to the letter as explained in the link - very interesting though, would seem to make perfect sense.

That shot of Hardknott reminds me of taking my old CCM SM up there a couple of years ago - the most fun I've had on a bike for ages :D
A group of mates are going up there again this summer on their SMs and I'm going to take the GS along to see if I can keep up with them - should be fun
