Guys,

I have fitted a Y piece and have a straight through exaust ( really straight through, not like the pants Remus jobs) and the bike is now gently backfires (not all the time but frequently) on transtition from open to closed throttle, having read a thread about someone holing a piston i am now a little worried about my trip to Italy in a week's time with the bike obviously running lean?If I slightly restrict the hole of the air intake, will this stop the bike running quite so lean? or should I bite the bullet and refit the cat for the time being?

I have a 2001 1150GS. At about 35k I fitted 'Y' piece, Remus Revolution and K&N filter (to go to Morocco) and became paranoid about it running lean.

After the 60k service last month (done 1500 miles since), fuel consumption imroved by just over 20% and it is backfiring everywhere.

Rang the dealer, they thing the Lamba sensor might have failed, and this is really the point of this post, they said just ride it in and they could stick it on their machine and tell whether it really was running lean or not (while you wait sir).

So maybe you could pop into your nearest dealer and get yours checked ?

Jack: A search would help you but in the meantime you should know that generally the cause of backfires is a poor fitting between the can and the Y piece causing air to enter the sysyem and cause unburnt fuel to ignite in the can. Still with me? Ok in that case the system cannot really be running lean to the point it would ruin your engine.

The fuel injection compensates for any changes you will make to the air intake - hence why GSs and other injected bikes go up mountains so easily and carb'd bikes splutter and cough.

If your plugs look bright white - then it's running lean. If the engine overheats easily (>5/6 bars on a English summer's day)- then it's running lean.

Generaly speaking if your bike sounds like a Spitfire over Dover on the overrun - it's normal. They all do that Sir.

A very cool feature indeed
