Is it normal for these to be very sooty .....totaly standard apart from a Beowulf can.....fully serviced with 13k on the clock.

I can wipe the exhaust inside the end and its black....the rack and box have signs of soot on them too.

Any ideas as to what needs doing ?

Thanks in advance

Doubt if it's running rich - quite the reverse if standard with a can. Mine is black also. If it starts easily, ticks over well and pulls ok - don't worry. Think about a remap in due course (to make it richer :D).

Thanks for that....starts and runs fine and apart from a flat spot between 4-5000 rpm's it pulls very well.

Check the spark plugs and lambda probes. If a coil (or two) is failing the ECU gets confused and over fuels the cylinder.

When one coil fails the other one won't be far behind.

Also check the coils trigger wires and connectors. Intermittent faults can look like a plug/coil fault.

Thats very helpful.....thank you

Mine went very rich and sooty on the RHS and ruined a lambda sensor by sooting it up. At that time I thought it was a lambda problem. I now believe it was a failing coil missfire that confused the ECU (unburnt fuel = too much O2 in exhaust so it adds more fuel). The coil smelled burnt.

I replaced one coil very shortly followed by the other and got an O2 sensor from BMW for silly money. Possibly the original would have coped had I just done the coils but its done now.

I've now got a repeat problem of rough running and vibration. Its not running on one side but its not properly smooth. Last night I disconnected and reconnected the RHS coil lead and for a while it was smooth again. Both coils are brand new, so I think there might be a fault in a low tension trigger wire. Time to break out the nail scissors (to trim off the covering), soldering iron, heat shrink sleeve, etc.

Would any of these faults show up on diagnostic's ??

Probably yes for the sensors, but apparently not the for coil faults. I ended up spending at least the cost of a GS-911 on new sensors (one £50 universal and one megabux BMW). That said the original sensor was probably stuffed by all the soot and they cant be cleaned.

There is recent thread where someone gives the NTK Lambda model code that's the same unit as BMW use for 50% money. The coils have not been sourced elsewhere.

TBH I have wondered if remote coils and HT leads could be used at least on the secondaries.

i used ngk lamdba sensors on my old 05 gs ,they worked brilliant ,they are a direct fit with the correct multiplug ,and as i work in the motor trade i got them at a reasonable price too. :thumb2
