My 1995 1100 seems to be running quite rich. Sooty looking tailpipe, smells a bit petroly and uses more fuel. Does anyone know any independent BMW mechanics in the Chester area who may be able to look at it or offer any advice for me to try and sort it out myself?

no but if u find out wat it is e mail ugg , he,s avin probs, it stinkss from behind of petrol

Thats because he syphons it out of yours when you make the coffee!..The smell of petrol is from the pipe hidden under his seat ;)

OKay So did it just start one morning? or what or has it always been so??

If you know anyone in a car garage that has a Gas analyser??

Go see them and get the probe up the exhaust when hot !!

THere are a couple of Electrical causes for this apart from clogged air filter and intake?

Number One is the oil temp sensor or wires thereby associated with it? It sends a signal back to the ECU to tell what temp it is and the ECU adjusts the mixture for that temp! If it thinks she's cold it will enrich the mixture! What does your temp gauge say???

Number two in top of the airbox is a probe thing? is it connected and are the connections clean? Yes?? Then clip off the airbox top and see if there's a leaf or debris over the wee wire!! Do not touch the wire or poke it may break, Use carb cleaner or compressed air but be careful not to damage it getting the airbox lid on is a knack but basically lift up the rear part till it's near vertical and then clip the front down in and lower the rear making sure the wee lugs line up at the front!! Patience It Will go In! and don't forget to clip it down!

Number Three is the CO potentiometer it's on a side rail under the seat rubber squarish thing sort of slipped on by a lug or two to the subframe If you look up inside there's a big brass screw DON'T Touch it! Go see the nice garage person You are looking for a CO mixture of 1.5 to 2.25 (this, according to my old foreman alleviates the "Surge" See what it is reading? (I think its clockwise to enrich and if it's anywhere near what it should be?? Adjust it only in quarter turn increments and give it 15 to 25 seconds to adjust. I wouldn't adjust by more than half a turn they can be really sensitive!

If it's around there when the bike is hot and your readout says the engines hot?? Leave it be and do some longer journeys :aidan :aidan :aidan

The above is the location on an RT - For a GS look under the rear mudguard, R/H side (offside) you'll see a hole, which leads to the CO pot.

Approx how many miles are you getting from a full tank of fuel ?

If you haven't a gas analyzer you can try sticking a screwdriver up inside the hole and turn the screw "in" to weaken the mixture. Try a turn at a time for starters and see how you go.

:thumb Thanks for that advice chaps I knew one of you would know. The tank range seems to vary, sometimes 200 miles, sometimes 170 even though they are on similar journeys suggesting an intermittent fault. I have a mate with a co2 meter, I will get it on there and see what it says.

130/140 low fuel light comes on , got 180 out once .
so will try above method , ta:thumb
