Running rough

I'm not convinced it's the stock coils as I get the same hesitation when running just on the secondary coils. Pulled the coil pack leads and idle drops which ever side I remove which would suggest they are good.
I've bought a new fuel filter to fit and the stupidly expensive bendy pipe and new clips.
Any other ideas/ things to check?

I've bought a set of used single spark leads to try running it in single spark mode to see if they can be used as a get by when on my travels, and to single out the stick coils.
The bike was running perfectly last week so it's a recent development although I did notice a slight hesitation after accelerating from a 50 limit, but it was a minor glitch and was fine on the ride home.

Feels like it's lagging when on the throttle, but fine at cruise

It will hold 90 fine, but stutters it's way up there. Definitely feels more fuel related than ignition, it's not popping and banging. What would a bad injector do?

The twin spark can be converted to be single spark. I sure there was a guy on the r1100s boxertrix site who did this and it all worked well.

Maybe try Rogers fuel system test here?

Could that be the hall sensor breaking down? Did you check the wiring at the sensor? It can get brittle with age. I had that in my early years of boxer ownership. Replaced Hall sensor cured it.

Disconnect the lamba sensor under the tank and take it out for a ride. Won't do any damage and it could be the culprit.

Have you tried running without the secondaries? That would seem like the obvious test for good stick coils?

Hesitation on acceleration is a definite pointer to failing stick coils. They may still be working well enough to make a difference on low load at tickover as you tested them but when the going get tough the weak sticks falter. Swap with a known good set to eliminate.

If you suspect a fuel issue, given that the in-tank hoses leak before they fail, I would measure the volume of fuel returning to the tank at idle. I have a 2' hose with female QD that I connect to the return line coming from the fuel distributor and route into a gas can. If you get about 2 liters in one minute at idle then everything in the tank is okay.

This test works because even at idle the fuel pump is still putting out full capacity at full pressure, just most of the fuel is bypassed by the fuel pressure regulator and returns to the tank.

This may not be your problem but this one test will rule out that system.

It is very hard to test your injectors but I wouldn't guess that they were the culprit. You could bypass the fuel pump relay and energize them with 12V and compare the spray pattern side to side.

Stick coils going can give odd symptoms I've found. Only 2 days ago I though my left stick coil was on the way out as bike was sluggish and a pronnounced ticking/rattle/general crap sound was definitely coming from the left hand side of the engine. I bought a new one and stuck it in - no difference.

Then this morning I tried changing the right hand coil and voila - better.

Unlike most of these types of threads I am going to finish this with a solution.

I bought the fuel filter and stupidly expensive bend fuel tube thingamajig and a set of stick coils. Haven't had time to do the fuel parts yet, so threw the coils in and I've just been out for a couple of hours......

Feck me what a difference!!

I thought it ran well when I bought it, but the stick coil replacement feels like it's had a twin cam 1200 motor thrown in it, so they must have been under performing for quite some time. It's properly fruity now

I'm still going to change the fuel bits as the bike is 11 years old so for safety of the 1150s reliability I'll do it as a precautionary/service measure, but new stick coils have not only solved the problem but rejuvenated the old girl.

What with the new suspension I am now riding what feels like a new bike, but one that I have known for years

I'll put a fiver on the bike getting a similar additional boost with an injector service/new injectors......Over the years, the spray pattern changes from a lovely rainbowy unicorny misty high pressure POW! effect to a damp, half hearted wheezy ejaculation that barely amounts to a dribble. (ring any bells?)
