I want to replace the 'orange' bolts/fittings on my 2010 GS Adv. I would love to replace them with SS ones but there are obvious concerns re their strength especially when it comes to critical bits, e.g. brakes etc. Anyone with some suggestions re the replacements please (I know, don't let them get orange in the first place!!).
Many thanks.

Oh no, not this old chestnut again. Look, my entirely restored R100GS-PD has SS fasteners everywhere Including the spokes. Just do it, damn it. Stop listening to scaremongers.

Over cautious I guess Paul, couldn't find a 'current' thread on the subject. Any suggestions for a supplier?

Stainless Fasteners

I have local tool supplier called "Resource" that sell al manner of stainless fasteners and they really are cheap as chips. They supply the medical service and I have managed to replace just about all the bolts etc on a K1200LT for less than £20!

Have started on the GS next. Even got the dome bolts for the discs. Only issue is its best to take the originals down for them to match.

If there is not a branch near you, I am happy to get them from my local branch and post on. MUCH cheaper than anywhere else I have bought stainless before.

Bob,
I'd be very interested in obtaining a full set, engine, brakes etc; there's not a Resource nearby unfortunately. ANY help gratefully appreciated.

Try Shaw Stainless, they do a full set or part set. Excellent quality and quick delivery. Also advertise on eBay but you can Google their site. Alan

I have some SS Torx fasteners ....

I've just bought a load of stainless steel Torx fasteners from PTS Fasteners ... unfortunately I had to buy the minimum quantities of each size so have loads spare! I've had the Shaw Stainless ones on the front engine casing but to be quite honest I decided it's easier if I keep everything more standard and keep to Torx fittings so swapped them.

When I get a minute I'll work out what sizes make up a "set" for the engine etc but if anyone needs any and knows what they want just let me know? In the meantime I'll check what sizes I have!

You could also go to your local B'n'Q and buy some 'Krust'.

It paints on using a little brush and turns orange rusty stuff into almost black rust free metal. Not shiny but it does get rid of the rust for good!
