It sounds like the only good thing about the XR is that it does fit normal people and not just the fucking midgets that the rest of the range seems to be aimed at these days !!!
Anything over 5' 10" is a waste of DNA.

Hello all
Like Ding Dong, I rode an XR up and down mountain passes in Italy last week (although not Stelvio - I used a GS for that...).
I posted a negative review on a couple of other forums, and did people get the shits! Christ, some wanted to lynch me for daring to go against the mighty all knowing mothership!
As we are all discerning, broad minded adults here, I will share my impressions with you.
Yes, the engine goes well, yes the brakes are great, yes it holds a line nicely, but why, in the name of all that is holy, did BMW make it so bloody tall!?
I'm 5 10 in the old money, and I was on my toes...stupid! What is the point? That front wheel has a nice fat road tyre on it - it is not going off road.... I also found it top heavy at slow speed.
The low suspension version that Ding Dong posted up should be the standard version.
Oh, and the vibes were awful, and the suspension rock hard.
God, it is ugly too....
If you are a rangy bastard with a cast iron arse and no aesthetic sensibilities, go for it.

Beats me why riders have to compare it to the GS!
The GS is what it is, a competent boxer twin ,all day comfy ,fast and lardy tallrounder with great handling in the mountain twisties.
The S10000000XR is a tall sportsbike with a manic elastic band of an engine and best BMW gearbox......it will be modified at some point just like every iteration of BMW BIKES do....the K16, the K12, every GS, BLAH BLAH BLAH
Sure BMW will claim the SXR is good for every type of road biking as they want to sell them but most punters will realise it a ballistic Sunday blast bike with comfy ergo's that can go touring with some compromises.
Bikers tour and blast on Harley .... and they vibrate, have no brakes, will not change gear and have no rear suspension.
For sure the SXR will not suit the mamby pambies, short arses and those of a nervous disposition (or those with loose fillings).

Still can't wait to pick mine up on Monday, and I am expecting to keep it at least a couple of years
Terry
I read that as.....I expect to keep mine a couple of days, lol
Spot on.
You have to laugh when GS riders start moaning about vibrations! My last few GS's vibrated worse than the XR, by a long chalk.

Yep, I agree too. The vibes are part of the experience, in the same way 2 strokes used to stutter before all he'll broke loose
To say the XR isn't a good all rounder seems stupid, it's fairly comfy, capable of carrying passenger and luggage and capable of 160 miles to a tank (plenty in the grand scheme of things when some only do 200 miles a day when on tour).
Comparing the XR to a GS is like saying an Aston Martin is shit because it doesn't soak up bumps like a land cruiser
Look at the positives, it's a scalpel, rapid, has probably the best electronics package available on any bike and IMHO looks fantastic. The screen is good, the ergonomics good, cruise control fantastic, all in all it's a pretty awesome machine.
If some don't like it, that's fine, you know my opinions on the Toilet, it won't be for everyone.
The XR is epic and probably one of the best bikes BM have made.

100% agree with your observations, my pet hates were vibes everywhere, hands, feet bum, body and why so freakin tall???
Cancelled my XR order, sticking with my 15 GS.
I was trying to find a 1 bike does it all solution but have now given up, I am pretty close to adding an MT09 to the garage to keep the GS company.
A good biking pal picked up his Red GXR yesterday and we both rode across country to arrive in Finchingfield
Has your Dvt taken a back seat !
I agree all bikes should have a quickshitter, I'm sure ducati will update the multi with one for nxt yr.
No, its sulking in the garage. I have to get the SXR run in and past first service for a trip to the Alps next month.
Is the XR restricted to 9000 revs until after the first service, like the RR anyone know ?
